Dear all,
----------------------------------------Due to the nature of my work, which includes some travelling, I started my first projects for WCG in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, without any issues related to connection etc. Now I am in Dubai, with the same laptop, there is Internet connection, there have been no changes whatsoever in my settings, however the Boinc Manager shows that it is reconnecting (the icon in the status bar has a red dot on top) and it does not reconnect. I get no messages, just the Reconnecting to Client. What may be the issue? Regards. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 18, 2013 8:34:43 PM] |

Hello Xenomorpheus,
I am puzzled. Bring up BOINC Manager and look at the Activity and Advanced options, such as 'Do Network Connection'. Try getting BOINC Help over the network. Have you changed your security software (firewall, antivirus)? What version of BOINC are you running, on what OS and with what security software? Lawrence |

Hello Lawrence,
I am puzzled too. In BIONC Manager the Activity option is set to * Run Always and *Network Always Available. In the Advanced Options, when I click on * Do Network Connection, nothing happens. I am using ACER with Windows 7 Home Premium with Avast Internet Security, but I did not change anything. It was working two days ago. I am using the latest version of Boinc. I somehow think it has something to do with my Internet connection here, but I have no idea why. |

If your BOINC Manager does not have "connected to localhost" right bottom [not anywhere else, just right bottom], than it's probable boinc.exe is not running also... it has to. boinc.exe is the program that controls the science applications and tasks. If the event log [v7 client, Ctrl+Shft+E keys] or the message tab [6.10 clients] is blank than that's another sign boinc.exe is not running. If it is not blank, than copy/paste the content top to bottom in a reply.

Hello Xenomorpheus,
I somehow think it has something to do with my Internet connection here, but I have no idea why. I suspect this is a waste of time, but go to Projects, select World Community Grid and then scroll down the Web Sites on the left of BOINC Manager and try one. This will only be interesting if it fails, since you are connecting to the Forum already using your browser. Take a look at the Help section titled 'Network Connection & Settings at https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=netconn if you have not already read it, in case it suggests something helpful. Avast is a good security program that works well with BOINC, so I suspect some sort of security program run by your ISP, but I do not know how to check that. Can anyone make some suggestions? ![]() Lawrence |

Rob,
Yes, it seems this is the problem, the lower right says "connecting to localhost" all the time. The message tab is blank. You say that probably boinc.exe is not running. How do I proceed? |

Try rebooting and seeif Program Files/BOINC/boinc.exe starts running. If not, try repairing your BOINC installation with a reinstall.

If you installed BOINC as service, open Task Manager with "Show all user processes". If there's no boinc.exe listed, it most defenitely is not running. Go to the service tab, right click on BOINC and select start [if it does not say ''running'']. If you installed as user, BOINC Manager is supposed to start boinc.exe, but then the 65000$ question is, if you are running BOINC Manager from the same account as from where you installed. Generally on one person computers I'd recommend a BOINC installation whilst in one of the screens selecting "allow all users". Prevents 99% of these issues, bar security software of course.

So, after reinstalling it several times, I finally managed to make it work. I tried to install as user with "allow all users" option, but it did not work. The only way it worked is when I installed it as service.
It remains a mystery as to why the breakdown happened. Anyway, it is operational now. Thank you for you help. |

OK, well, mark this thread title for now as [RESOLVED], like I did to this post. Service -is- generally the sure thing for BOINC to go and keep running [according prefs], and has the benefit that it will launch even if you don't sign in... power up, walk away for the morning coffee chat and when returning already humming, no slow down during sign-in **, but only if you go for coffee ;)
----------------------------------------** or use <start_delay> config feature if it interferes with rushing towards the first e-mail. edit: Running as service, sandboxed environment on the BOINC limited rights account is most secure form too.
