For a couple of weeks now WCG only runs one task, then when finished does not upload or get new work. When I update the project manually, it gets just one task and then goes just until that is done. I have six cores running, and WCG is set to get 50% of the work. Previously I was seeing WCG downloading many tasks and running several at a time, and automatically uploading them and getting new work. What is happening? How do I fix it?

Hello polanve,
In addition to the description of your system from the Event Log, please tell us which projects you are running and whether you are using an app_config.xml file to limit your work. Lawrence |

Hi, I tried creating an app_config.xml file to solve the problem, but it just creates an error. Here is the log:

I just realized that I had named the file cc_config.xml instead of app_config.xml
I renamed it and got a whole bunch of new work for WCG. Thanks! |

Fixed, but not resolved, as there's a row of questions that came up reading this exchange. Posting the content of any cc_config and app_config and telling where these files exactly are probably would answer a few. Of course, seeing a clean energy task logged, you'd only get one by default, but it would upload and report normally given there's Einstein and SETI too.
The behavior though is covered by the only tag I see in the manual to do what is observed, which is the cc_config <fetch_minimal_work> tag and this one would just function in a cc_config. It would get 1 work unit and process it, then waits. This tag is global though, meaning not just wcg. The client would only have one task at any time. Beyond that one no tag exists that I see for client side configuration to just fetch one and then wait after completion. Wish there was as then I'd apply it to faah for my reasons and only get FAHV. |

So just to be sure I have this right, Here is more info:
I am running BOINC at 100% 24/7 on a Phenom X6 at 3.9 GHz. The OS is Win 7 64 Ultimate. I have the program on the C Drive and the Data directory on D. I am putting the config file in the BOINC data directory D:\BOINC. I had originally read somewhere to put the tag in a file named cc_config.xml, but that only returned the error message unrecognized tag. the content of the file was: <cc_config> <options> <zero_debts>1</zero_debts> </options> </cc_config> So when I saw to use app_config.xml I just changed the filename and BOINC started downloading lots of tasks from WCG again. However on the chance that I have perhaps set myself up for another problem due to my ignorance, I am posting this in case anyone sees a glaring error. One more detail: I used to get a dialogue box that would popup when I started BOINC and now it just jumps straight into running. |

I looked at the User Manual in the BOINC Wiki at https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration but I could not find a good explanation for this problem.
My apologies. ![]() Lawrence |

Donr know what the purpose of the zero_debt tag was in this case, but as of version 7 the debt was removed from boinc. This is why it was spitting error. It belonged in cc_config and sadly the entry was removed from the manual rather than marked as deorecated.
In effect app_config which has its own set of non-duplicating tags belongs in the project folder. See manual what it can and where it goes. Where the file is now with the content it has it is just ignored. My guess is boinc just needed a jostle. No reason why it did what it did with the additional info provided. |
