Hi!
----------------------------------------Since some days I got problems with some tasks of Vina 7.06. If I need to stop and restart later the tasks say ![]() progress (for example): 20% time elapsed: 00:00:00 (but it ran for an hour or more the last time) (screenshot says 3 minutes because I needed time for making the screenshot ![]() I stop them by changing the controls (stop), then ending boinc. Have this problem again today. The last time two tasks needed a week - every day some hours - and at the end I had to run my pc for 9 hours consecutively to get them finished. What do I wrong? Or is it a problem of Vina 7.06? Thanks for your answers! [Edit 1 times, last edit by micro2011 at Apr 1, 2014 1:04:46 PM] |

When you stop a task, then re-start it will start from the last checkpoint which 'could' be a considerable time earlier, leave your PC on 24/7 for best results

Thanks for your fast answer.
![]() So if I have to turn off my pc it would be the best to look when the last checkpoints of the tasks were listed. ...And maybe have to wait for a recent checkpoint. Good to know! Greetings! |

You can also hibernate you PC instead of shuting it down.

I do the same as Falconet. The glowing power button annoys me so I cover it with a t-shirt so I can sleep more easily. Now I don't have to worry about the last checkpoint and as soon as I get up Boinc continues where it left off.

Download BoincTasks.
If you root around in the options, it can display the time since the last checkpoint. http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/boinc_tasks/ But what's with the long run times and long times between check points on FAAH? I thought Vina tasks were supposed to be fast (12.5 hour tasks and 3.5 to 4.5 hour check points)? |

l_mckeon,
VINA tasks contain multiple jobs inside of each. We try to capture and average the runtimes for the various ligands used for comparison. So say there are 3 million ligands that we are comparing. Some have 25 atoms with 6 torsions, other have 40 atoms with 2 torsions. These ligands would be different in runtime length. We previously were able to size them relatively well based on these stats, but with the new flex parameter that was introduced a few months ago, the average used in the past may have been +or- 5 minutes is now +or- 1 hour for example. So if you think of a bell curve of averages, before it was a steeper curve and now it is more flat. Basically with the introduction of the flex parameter things are not as easy to estimate. We are able to keep work units around certain lengths with our estimations, but there are some that happen to be larger than others. Thanks, -Uplinger Note: All values used are just examples and not real. |

Uplinger: Thanks for the explanation.

Thanks for your replies!
----------------------------------------Does anybody have experience with the combination of BOINC and VirtualBox? On the BOINC site they write: "VM apps are automatically "restartable". The contents of the VM are written to disk every few minutes, and if your computer is turned off for a while, the application can restart close to where it left off." (source:http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/VirtualBox) It may be a good idea for this problem too? [Edit 1 times, last edit by micro2011 at Mar 26, 2014 4:08:56 PM] |

World Community Grid does not use the VirtualBox and BOINC combination.
Thanks, -Uplinger |
