I'm helping someone to put Ubuntu Linux into their old computer. I did it once for mine, but I don't remember everything. Can you all help me please?
Where can I get the official newest version? I remember I had to copy it into a cd, it was a huge program. Then I also forgot the details as to which options to select or something like that. Currently it has Windows Vista, but it's not working, it keeps asking for the original disk. So I want to reformat the hard drive and install Ubuntu Linux. |

Thank you so much. Next I will first try to download it and make a CD.
I may have some questions a bit later, when I get ready for the actual installation. |

On my computer with Ubuntu Linux, how do I find out which version I have?
Under 'Help' it only tells me which version of Firefox under 'about Firefox', but I don't see where I find out the version number of Ubuntu. |

Well, system language on my PC is German. So I don't know the actual names on the English version of Ubuntu.
----------------------------------------Start a program called 'System Monitor' or something like that. Go to the tab 'System' and there you'll find the information. ![]() Ask not what the world can do for you - ask what you can do for the world. |

Go the Definitions Center and search for System Information.

You're right. version 13.10 is available now, and I guess like you say 14 coming soon.
But when I went to download it, I noticed that 12.04 has guaranteed security and support till 2017. 13.10 will be supported for 9 months. So that's got me a little confused and wondering should I just download the 12.04? |

If you want, you use the 12.04 version now and if you need to, you can upgrade to 14.04 which will be a LTS version meaning another 5 years (?) of support.
