Acrostic words

Each game starts out with a list of words containing at least four letters and at most eight letters like this:

amAssing
seCluded
teRrific
blOwfish
vaScular
waTerway
raInfall
huCkster

Vertical words used:
acrostic

1. Each word must have the same number of letters.
2. The number of words must match the number of letters in each word.
3. The list of words must spell out a word vertically, up or down, using the letters in the same position of each word.
4. Words used must be actual (common) words.
5. Highlight the vertical word using caps or use the courier font for the word matrix.
6. Add the new vertical word to the list of used vertical words.
7. The first game starts with four four letter words and subsequent games increase by one letter/word.
8. After eight eight letter words, the next game resets to four.

To play:

1. Swap the order of the existing words to spell at least one word vertically up or down using the letters in the same position of each word where the vertical word, regardless of direction, has not been used previously for the list of words. Add the new vertical word to the list of vertical words used.

2. While reordering the existing words, substitute another word with the same number of letters for one currently in the list that spells at least one word vertically up or down using the letters in the same position of each word. Add the new vertical word to the list of vertical words used.

3 If the swapping or substitution results in more than one word vertically up or down, the game ends and the player gets to start the next game.

4. If more than twenty four hours has passed since the last play, the next player has the choice between playing the
existing game or starting the next game.

Notes:
Use an anagram generator such as http://www.wordsmith.org/anagram/ to look for words using the letters in a specific column.

One source for finding words matching a specified pattern is http://www.onelook.com

To set the word matrix to courier font, while creating your post, select the word matrix highlighting it as if to copy, click on the down arrow in the FONT box and select courier.

Re: Acrostic words

I hope I understood correctly that it's EITHER 1) or 2), and not 1) THEN 2) !

fuLl
boAt
maDe
muSh

Vertical words used (new list):
LADS

(I think I won't remember all the rules ...)

Re: Acrostic words

replace mush with dorm to spell stem in last column

adds
boat
made
dorm

Please use the COURIER LARGE for the word matrix

do this by selecting the matrix and then clicking the drop down list for fonts.

To select large, you have to do this again and now select large from the size drop down list. You can highlight the whole block including the tags though so it's not a complete pain in the butt.

Thanks to Keith Henry for getting us organized. Yeaaaaaa KH.

Substitute boss for final word yielding DADS down and SETS up.

NEW GAME:

Five five-letter words:

oSaka
sCore
mOoch
tRoop
aEgis

Vertical words used:
SCORE

Note: I will add a note about using courier font in the header but will not require it. Having the vertical word in caps seems more readable and a tad simpler. Either should suffice for readability. Also, I had thought the vertical word would stay in the same column position per game but that
is not really explicit and most likely too restrictive so vertical words can change columns during a game.

Re: Acrostic words

What do you think about sliding words instead of just swapping them?

For example moving osaka down 2 slots and pushing the next 2 words up one slot each to spell 'atoms' in the first column vertically?

Okay, I've edited the header to add moving one word in the word order as a means of play. Thanks folks for working out the kinks!

OK, so to continue were we left off, insert osake between troop and mooch thereby sliding those to words up to form 'atoms' vertically in the first column

Score
Mooch
Osaka
Troop
Aegis

edit: ha. Spelled Osaka with an e to be 'oh-sake.' I do love a good sake but not sure where that came from - although I was at the vino store yesterday. cool

Re: Acrostic words

scorE
otheR
osakA
trooP
aegiS

Vertical words used:
score
atoms
spare

I've opened things up more so that play consists of either substituting a new word for an existing one or reordering the existing words. In either case, the vertical words cannot be reused in that game. Hopefully that will make play easy enough to be practical.
