Cloud Server Comparison Thread

This thread is to compare:

    Providers
    Service (customer & setup times)
    Performance
    Output
    Value for money
I've started this thread to move the current discussion out of the UK team thread...

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

I'm currently awaiting a Dual xeon 5539 server (each processor has 6 core & 12 threads)

Provider - WholeSaleInternet
Setup time quoted as 1-2 business days
Cost per Month - $59

I placed the order for this on Wednesday 16/07/14, I'm still waiting for it to come on line...

I contacted support who confirmed I would not get charged until it was online, i.e. the renewal date would reset once the server was online.

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

Same provider as Mamajuanauk, but I managed to grab one of the dual-5650 (6-core, 12-thread, 2.66-3.06GHz per core) servers when they were briefly back in stock.

Had a few issues when trying to order it, which almost caused me to sack it off and look for another provider, but one of their very helpful pre-sales staff jumped in and managed to get everything sorted out, so am also awaiting the build.

Provider - Wholesale Internet
Setup - quoted as 1-2 business days
Cost - $69/month

Will post some more opinions, once it's installed and has had a few days to settle into some constant work.

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

I'm also testing a server with Kimsufi, details below:

Specs - dual Xeon 5504/4c total 8c, 16Gb, 2tb HDD

    Provider - Kimsufi
Setup - 120 Seconds! - Yes really! and it was!
Cost - 9.99 Euro setup, 24.99 Euro monthly
Support via forum, response times vary from almost instant from other users/customers to a little longer for staff
After initial setup, you get web access to install your chosen OS, which takes about 30 minutes, then around 24 hours later yoou get the logon details and off you go.

I've been running this for a few days the results are looking good so far:
07/19/2014 0:003:04:11:31 12,422 21
07/18/2014 0:008:01:28:28 33,754 100
07/17/2014 0:008:08:38:32 32,809 94
07/16/2014 0:007:15:06:33 29,867 87
07/15/2014 0:000:04:12:11 897 2
19th is the lunchtime update figure.

We need some way to measure value for money. Can we do this using cost per point or may be result?

Currently my output is just under 110K for 4 days (ignoring day 1) about 27.5k per day. 27.5 x 30 = 825k per month

so if my maths is correct cost per 1,000 points = 25/825 = 0.03 Euros assuming two things, my maths/logic and the points output is stable/consistant

Suggestions?

That's a pretty good price. I have a couple of those and I think they draw between 150 and 200 watts but I think closer to 150 so at about $.20/kwh I figure they cost me about $25 per month to run.

They must be getting both their electricity and rack space at pretty cheap rates to be making any money at those rates.

I believe your logic/math is correct, but the points output has shown itself to be quite variable. Regardless, though, you are getting work done.
Cheers

@Sgt. Joe
Thanks Joe, looking at other devices, running the same project also appear to have variable output, as this device is within the same sort of range as the rest I've looked at I'm happy.

I'll post some more data in a few days on this device, then the other one when it eventually comes on line

Re: Cloud Server Comparison Thread

Not being as keen a cruncher as some I dont have a dedicated server running multicores and threads. But I do have a KVM VPS that crunches in between other intermitent duties.

Provider:123systems.net
Service : customer service is untested! provisioning only takes a couple of minutes.
Performance: 256Mb ram, 10Gb ssd, 1 vCPU. 4.79 hours/WU FAAH.
Output: 114 WCG points/hour.
Value for money: $14 USD per year.

I would recommend digitalocean.com for dipping your toes in the virtual server market place. You pay by the hour upto $5 USD per month for a 1vCPU 512Mb 20Gb VPS.
It's a much more pleasant experience than trying to use the Amazon EC2 eco-system AND they have great tutorials/community forums.

If your a cheapskate like me blushing check out lowendbox.com for cheap as chips deals on VPS and dedicated servers. cool

Have a lot of fun! smile

Many thanks sunfolk, that sounds like a good budget option, with reasonable output. Have you tried MCM on it? MCM should return more PPH as FAAH/Auto reduce the average output.

Would be an interesting test...

Provider:digitalocean.com
Service : customer service IS excellent. provisioning only takes a couple of minutes.
Performance: 512Mb ram, 20Gb ssd, 1 vCPU. 3.36 hours/result MCM
Output: 217 WCG points/hour.
Value for money: $5 USD per month

Have a lot of fun! biggrin
