Thread: Violence on Southampton Seafront! - disgusting |

I witnessed absolutely disgusting behaviour on the sea front at Southampton today. I saw a man and a woman having an almighty argument in front of a load of kids. Suddenly the woman smacked the guy on the head and it all kicked off!!! There was a massive brawl and someone must have phoned the police. This poor copper turned up on his own and took his baton to the man. The guy managed to get the baton off the copper and began to assault the copper and his wife!!!

There's a show on History Channel H2 called America's Secret Slang that is really, really interesting if you're into word origins, especially common slang terms.
----------------------------------------Anyway, the expression 'pleased as punch' apparently comes from Punch and Judy puppet plays where the plays normally end with Punch beating and/or murdering various people who have ticked him off and saying 'That's the way to do it' or something like that. So being 'pleased as punch' is really like saying 'pleased as Charles Manson or Jeffrey Dahmer.' Both sick and comical at the same time. :)   |
