Layoffs could hit up a quarter of IBM's workforce
----------------------------------------If that happens, it would mean over 100k people would lose their jobs. Cringely said the layoffs will begin next week and by the end of February, all of the employees will be gone. If nothing else, IBM's first quarter numbers will take a monstrous hit from the severance packages for 111,000 employees. To say nothing of what this will do to its customer confidence. ![]() ![]() |

There's already a redundancy program happening in the UK - this must be (at least) the third (possibly, and quite probably more) since I got the bullet in 2010.
----------------------------------------Unfortunately, there's already been so many of these rounds of redundancies, that there been no "fat" left to cut - they're well into cutting limbs off by now ![]() The real sad fact of the matters, is the actual knock-on effect this (as does all redundancy programs) has on the individuals concerned. Not only financially, but physically and mentally - I should know, as it's only just been this past week when I started my first fulltime job since I was chopped (and boy, what a hit my savings took, not to mention the stress that not having a permanent source of income created in my family). I really do hope that all the people (who are all intelligent and well educated - after all, IBM doesn't employ "numpties"), find a new source of income quicker that I did. ![]() |

yes, good luck to everyone, it is sad indeed.
----------------------------------------My place of work has been taking hits since the economic downturn started in 2007. Due to many factors involved in mergers, acquisitions, sell-offs, buy-outs, buy-ins, etc.... From ~140 people that were in core IT in 2007, seven remain after the round that happened a week ago. Fortunately, still one of the seven; after being here for ... 34 years come July I'm not unhappy;) I am unhappy that my output here has been chopped- I just can't keep up the 850+ or so Gflops per day Seing my totals drop the last couple of days as cores are gone and wingmen report in on my PV's has made me quite unhappy :( Again, best of luck to all. ![]() |

"I don't know if the report's right or wrong, but I believe it's very likely a gross exaggeration," said Frank Gens, chief analyst at IDC.

IBM has reinvented itself before. They're trying focus on higher margin rather than commodity businesses. They did that in the 90's I think by shifting the focus from hardware to services and that turned the company around. Now they're moving into cloud-based software and analytics. They're main problem is that their legacy businesses have eroded much faster than they predicted and they were relying on these to support the transition.
