Re: Raspberry Pi & WCG

I notice that Enigma@Home is supported by both Linux and Android, so I'll do some performance benchmarking on both and let you know the outcome. I suspect the performance will be better on the Raspian build that I'm currently using......

Any update on this?

Re: Raspberry Pi & WCG

Hi Tim,

Seems that most efforts with the Android build on the Pi & Pi2 have stalled, so I've not had an opportunity to try this on my Pi2 as yet. With that said, my enthusiasm has waned significantly since attempting to have an open discussion on the Raspberry Pi forums about this.

Looking around at many different forums, most seem to agree that if you're after a low-power consuming, yet-high-crunching device, then the HardKernel C1 is a much better choice than the Pi2.

I've never used the Odroid devices, but if you have a brief look at the Raspberry Pi Forums relating to Android, you'll notice some serious hostility towards anyone who even asks about it; much of this coming from the Raspberry Pi Foundation itself. Not what I'd call professional or motivating for an organisation that had the public guise of promoting education/development/creativity/etc.

I haven't posted on here for a while about this, but I'm going to disband my efforts for Android on the Pi; just like most others. For the same price I paid for the Pi2, I can get a C1 - which uses the same amount of power but at a larger FLOP-to-Watt ratio.

The main reason I started looking at low-power devices was to cluster them and again it seems that I backed the wrong horse without doing my research (the Pi2 is now a MAME device) as there are plenty of great posts out there where people have clustered their Odroids for BOINC crunching and are doing quite well (any search of 'odroid', 'boinc', 'cluster', etc. will find what you're after).

I hope someone does an Android build for the Pi2, simply because there are plenty of people out there who would like to use it; but I doubt it'll be anytime soon.

Re: Raspberry Pi & WCG

I bought a Pi a few months before the new version was announced. I was toying with the idea of upgrading my Pi media machine and using the "old" Pi as a boinc device. Thanks for the heads up. You've saved me research time :)

While you're trying to solve problems with PI...you can easily get a media devices, CUBE or USB for TV with Android...and crunch data with it!

why bothering with PI?

Yes, well I agree; after buying one and investing some time into it.

I'd still like to use the hardware I've already got to crunch some WUs; so given that Microsoft have decided to release Windows 10 on the Pi2 , this may still be an option.

Naturally it'll be after IBM build a client to support it....

Re: Raspberry Pi & WCG

I am not 100% sure on the C1. I found a site that had some direct comparisons.
The C1 looked like it beat the PI 2 but by not by huge percents.

Still looking for a better comparison somewhere.

It would be nice to run either for the WCG. My PI sits idle 99% of the time.

Let me think about it: When win 10 was loaded to the PI2 and is up and running do you think there is some ram of the 1 GB left to run boinc?

Personally I have 2 odroid u3 and 2 odroid xu3 lite up and running wcg on android. They run without any problems 24/7.

Re: Raspberry Pi & WCG

What Cube are you talking about?

The interesting thing to me is the explosion of alternatives to Intel/Microsoft over the past few years.

Distributed computing is going to have to adjust to this and be a bit more flexible.
