Attaching your WCG to BAM!

I have been trying to attach the WCG project to my BAM! account manager so it will push down to all my computer and run with out me having to go to each one. Is there a step by step out there anywhere? When I try to do it from the "add a project" link I get no account found response. Thanks in advance

Ken

Re: Attaching your WCG to BAM!

trkr75, sorry but BAM is -not- fully functional with WCG, which is why you get the 'no account found response'. It kind of works once WCG is manually attached to a client. When that is first done, the client remembers, BUT, modifying anything but global preferences [how to compute], will not modify the device profiles at WCG. Maybe a trick is to attach a second project to the client, then that second BOINC project can transmit the changes back to the client. As BOINC only listens to the last project that has the profiles modified, they would only updated from WCG when going to the device manager > device profile > custom area. Long as you only use 'My projects' in My Contributions, nothing will be send to overwrite your BAM profile settings.

If this sounds complicated, yes it is if new to working WCG+BAM.

Re: Attaching your WCG to BAM!

P.S. , in BAM you have to make sure to tick the 'attach new host by default' for WCG at the BAM 'My Project' page http://boincstats.com/en/bam/projects/. Strange things could happen if you don't such as WCG being detached and attached again, loosing work in progress.

Re: Attaching your WCG to BAM!

The problem is I can't get the WCG project added to actually put the tic mark in there to attach it by default

Re: Attaching your WCG to BAM!

Certainly I could add WCG to the BOINC client to 'Add project...' on the Tools menu, even with BAM account manager already attached.

The ticking of WCG is done over at BAM at BOINCstats. On the 'Sign-up for Projects' page at http://boincstats.com/en/bam/signup/ you either tick the 'create account' or 'Find account'. WCG you need to tick the 'Find account' box. [I've not seen a add a project page over at BAM/BOINCStats]

Frankly, if you only do WCG, the BoincTasks manager is superior in managing multiple computers on the same LAN. There's no advantage using BAM for WCG, except if it works, which ATM it is not doing properly, you can see detail device statistics.

So once I add a project on one of my computer BAM! should pick it up and add it to the rest?

What do you mean by add a second project? I have the two projects from BAM! and one from WCG witch I have working on all the projects with in WCG that I could select.

Re: Attaching your WCG to BAM!

Just my 2 cents...

I am currently using GridRepublic, and about 5 years ago I was able to add WCG to my profile, so it is running on all my machines since then. Last night I discovered BAM!, so started creating a profile there with the intention to switch from GridRepublic to BAM! in the coming days. Of course, I wanted to have the same project coverage.

When it came to adding WCG to my list of projects on BAM! website, Find Account simply seemed to not work, at first. My email on WCG and BAM! were the same. And, it wouldn't work. Then, I changed my username at BAM! from "TunaE" to "Tuna Ertemalp", which is also my username at WCG, and then Find Account in BAM! just worked; now WCG is among my Projects at BAM!.

Needless to say, this is rather non-standard. If I actually had to guess, this is a problem with the way WCG seems to want to use the username rather than email for everything, even though BOINC has made the email a pivotal part of the user's identity, while generating CPIDs, etc. All other BOINC project sites require email/pwd to login, but WCG needs username/pwd. I think the problem starts right there...

And, I think this leads to further problems. My GridRepublic.org page simply cannot do anything against WCG; when I try setting the project priority to 400 from the default 100, I get "We have encountered an error communicating with your project. Your changes have not been applied." Similarly, in BAM! I can set it to 400, yet on its MyProjects page, the Last Attempt for WCG displays "No response from Project". And, of course, in my BOINC Manager on all my machines, the priority is set to 100, proving that both GR and BAM! failed at setting it to 400.

One might say to change it to 400 in WCG's default device profile. Yet, all the default settings in there are so out of whack ("Do work while computer is in use=YES"???), I wouldn't want to touch it with a 10ft pole just to change the 100 to a 400.

I think WCG is a great project (case in point: 400 would have made it the top priority project in my list of projects by a fair margin), however it needs to play better with BOINC just like other BOINC projects. It seems to want to exist in its own universe, somewhat self-centric.
