Old or broken smartphones/tablets for BOINC and BOINC only

Hello Smartphone/Tablet Users,

Could you please post in this thread, why your last device was broken
and why you had to buy a new one?

Was it the screen that had scraches?

Was the keyboard of the device broken?

Did the software have an severe error?

And the most important point: Did BOIC still work when the device was broken, yes or no?

I want to find out, whether it makes sense to buy broken, old smarphones/tablets and
use them for BOINC and BOINC only.

Thank you.

@Admin: Think this belongs in the Android forum, at least not S&F.

Re: Old or broken smartphones/tablets for BOINC and BOINC only

Well, thank you for moving the post.

I my view, it is important that those fellowcrunchers who use old smartphones lying
somwhere in the corner just for crunching, are able to switch them form the
"do just only one workunit at night and reload, do nothing during the day" (let's call it powersleep mode, mabe) to the "work for BOINC nonstop" mode.

Which steps are necessary to do this?

Sorry, but I cannot find out myself, I have only a desktop PC.

So, again: How to change the preferences form "powersleep mode" to "full workload mode?
Thank you for your answer.

Re: Old or broken smartphones/tablets for BOINC and BOINC only

Well, I didn't bought a defect device in the past and not goong to do so. I had a new Samsung S4 mini crunching 24/7 until the akku was close to blow up.
In a couple of month I will replace my S4. Perhaps I'm going to add it to boinc too and carefully watch the akku.
From the experience so far I personally can recommend only android devices that run with a seperate power supply.
To bad that a Smartphone doesn't run with power supply only.

I crunch with a three year old Samsung Galaxy S3 (broken screen). I run 24/7 on only one of the two cores. No problems yet.

Re: Old or broken smartphones/tablets for BOINC and BOINC only

I pick up dual core cell phones often for ~$10 USD. So, I find it not worth the $$ to buy broken ones...YMMV I have over a dozen right now that primarily run BOINC and a few money making apps. They have never been activated on actual phone service. They just run off my wifi.

@Coleslaw--what did you look for on the cheap phones to make sure they could run boinc and wcg before you bought them? Did you just have to check if it was an ARM processor?
