In the beginning you could only control settings on BOINC for Android from the device profile at your My Contribution > Settings > Device Manager > Default, which was the only profile the Androids would listen for -except- for project selection which is per the profile you selected to link to your tablet. Mine is associated to -work-, so it only gets OET of the available sciences.

Just testing it now, selected Default and ticked it as Default project under the custom settings [at top]. Near the bottom is "Connect to network about every nn days" and "Cache nn extra days of work". Set both these to 0.00. Think the connect default is 0.25 days.

Not sure it works, but I'll watch it. Have 4 on my Nexus ATM, but only 2 cores are allowed to compute. The tablet completes a task in about 8-12 hours.

Let us know if this changes the work buffering for you. On a desktop when both cache settings saved with zero, new work is not fetched until a few minutes before finishing present work.

Did you try the proposed changes?

If there's too much work now, simply abort it. Some other device will get the work assigned within seconds. No reason for any volunteer to be caused stress disillusion by WCG for lack of control and adaptability through easy client settings.
