Older Android Devices

Hey everybody,

I'm pretty new, so I don't understand most of what a lot of posts say. Please keep your responses easy to understand.

Yesterday, I bought an old, used phone just to run BOINC. I can't take it back, because it is used. I had done my research ahead of time to see which version of Android it needed. Apparently the information I read was wrong (Android 2.3 or something), because I came home and found on another page that it is now 4.1. So, I'm stuck with this device that is 4.0.4, go figure. Close but no cigar.

Can anyone offer insight? I know there is a NativeBoinc app, which I'm trying, but I'm not sure if I have all the settings correct for computing. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Older Android Devices

Plz post a link to the help page that says 2.3.n is enough. Admin needs to correct that.

It's been for longer, 4.1 minimum [for the science applications!] and 5 or 6 advisable (my from 4.0 al the way to now 6.0 Marshmallow with this latest runs zero errors.

My Galaxy S2 is also 4.0.4. I can't run World Community Grid on it anymore, but I run Einstein@Home on it using the official BOINC app. It's too bad they removed support for older versions of Android. I racked up a couple years of time on this phone for Fight Aids At Home.

Re: Older Android Devices

you can always use some "exotic versions of Android" on older devices...though I do have one SonyEricsson mobile with v2.3.1, that could be upgraded...but never wanted to play with putting that OS! wink

Re: Older Android Devices

It's actually the Boinc information page (which seems to be based on wiki.) But I guess admins should probably post that for our members somewhere or contact those at Berkeley so they know to change it. The page that said 4.1 was a WCG page, but I assumed since WCG was using the Boinc program, looking at Boinc's page would be acceptable. Apparently, it is not. Maybe there's a whole lot more that I just don't understand.

How are you doing this with the official BOINC app? Mine won't even let me download it. See it, yes. But acquisition isn't happening.

Re: Older Android Devices

Odds are he had it installed before they changed the requirements.

You can download 7.4.37 from here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.4.37.apk
7.4.14: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.4.14.apk
7.3.12: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.3.12.apk

All three of those options are direct from Berkeley

Re: Older Android Devices

OK, updated the wiki. You can actually still get the older .apk BOINC builds from Berkeley /dl list that will install on older Android releases. You'd have to [temporarily] disable the install security to get those older versions on.

For those not up on the terminology, this is called "side loading". To do it you have to go into Settings > Security > Unknown Sources and check the box. You may get a warning prompt, but just move past as you will need to do this in order to install the application.

Then download the file if you haven't already. Navigate to where you downloaded it and install the app. If you want to undo the security change afterwards, you may with the same procedure as above only unchecking the box.

Edit: typo

Yes, as someone else said, I've had it installed on there for a while. I have also used NativeBOINC in the past with a good results, however.
