Re: Welcome to the Help Stop TB Project

If you have a recent version of BOINC, you don't even need a name. Just place this app_config.xml in the project folder:

<app_config>
<project_max_concurrent>1</project_max_concurrent>
</app_config>

Re: Welcome to the Help Stop TB Project

Hi again,
Yes I will try to look into the forum from time to time - hopefully regularly, but can't really say how often.
Great to see how 'into the grid' you are. Just very briefly, most points of concerns you raised are relevant and we work on them. E.g. optimizing a balance between short and long runs, decreasing dependencies and increasing independent parallel WUs, managing data flow between us and the wcg, data reduction, etc
Sorry that I can't go into detail for time reasons, but love to see your thoughts

Re: Welcome to the Help Stop TB Project

Christof, if you got a minute to spare, can you please explain the work unit naming structure [did not catch this info as yet].

HST1_000257_000023_AC0017_T000_F00044_S00001_2
HST1_000052_005161_AC0027_T350_F00061_S00001_1
HST1_000015_001439_AC0009_T300_F00039_S00001_1

One member already figured out that the T000 are shortish and the T350 are long [I've only seen 2 computing time sizes so far either T000 or the T300/T350 durations].

Re: Welcome to the Help Stop TB Project

Basically, the first two digits are index recognition numbers for the wcg, the other ones for us. AC numbers describe the simulation system, T the simulation type/parameters and the others refer to sub-system classification
So, yes T000 is a different setup, connected with much shorter computing time. the others should have similar longer sim times
cheers

Re: Welcome to the Help Stop TB Project

Question: Is HSTB going to have their own project web page with info, statuses etc at Nottingham as all the other WCG projects have? (Looked hi and lo but was unsuccessful at Googles).

Re: Welcome to the Help Stop TB Project

Yes we definitely plan to do this, but haven’t got around finishing it, yet. Other project issues kept us busy. So hopefully, soon

I have received a number of T400 type work units. They also appear to be the longer-running WU's, which is consistent with the explanation from Christof above. By far the majority of the WU's I have received have been the longer-running varieties.

It would be interesting to understand:
1. the method by which they are generated;
2. what determines if a batch will be T000;
3. if the flow of batches and work units will increase once the base of valid results is sufficient to give rise to a range of new batches.

Re: Welcome to the Help Stop TB Project

Hi again,
I briefly try to answer your questions.
the Tddd numbers stand for different system setups. So T000 and soon also T001 simulations have a setup which can be described as a quicker, more efficient, but cruder simulation setup.
All simulations are run with these setups and the more precise and costly one. This is necessary to give us the chance to compare the outcomes and decide for the future where we need the more expensive simulations and where we can go with the cheaper ones.
Further, we also have differences in the setup between the 300,325,350,400 and the 000 and 001 simulations. However, these differences don't effect their estimated runtime. Thus, the estimated balance between short and long runs is 1:2 when all simulations are on the system.
This however varies and can change in soon future, depending on our first analysis.
I hope this explains a bit.
Just to give a short outlook. Our first analysis will show for which research question we can use which type of setup. This will then be used to setup new simulations - probably with higher complexity - which then will be also added - probably with additional alpha and beta testing in order to find suitable WU run times.
So we won't only stick to those two WU types for the duration of the project
Cheers

Hi all,

Let me thank you for your contribution so far! I will also be active in the forum and try to answer questions and contribute to discussions on our project smile

Thank you for your support,
Athina

Re: Welcome to the Help Stop TB Project

Thank you Christof and Athina

It is most encouraging to have regular interaction with the scientists involved in the project.

Christof, your reply certainly explains a lot.
Essentially, the direction I was pursuing with the questions was to try and get a response to the third question. In other words, is it likely that the work flow will increase after an initial settling-in period or are there other constraints which mean the project will continue at the current levels?
