Recently I read that some ChromeOS devices will be getting access to the Google Play store. Would it follow that these devices can then download BOINC for Android and participate or would some tweaks need to be made to the application for ChromeOS? How about devices that are using x86 chips with ChromeOS instead of ARM?

Is Chrome-OS a Linux derivative? Yes, and running on a x86 based CPU, chance it already runs **... it's all about how the OS identifies itself to WCG when asking for work. But, BOINC on Google play store is compiled for ARM chips, so that version wont port. You'll be needing a package that installs on Chrome OS Linux.
----------------------------------------If rejected, there's still a chance with using the <alt_platform> tag in the cc_config.xml file and give it a Linux OS string the servers know. Try and you will learn. BTW, could not immediately find a Chrome OS entry over at BOINCStats when parsing through WCG breakdown by OS... no one seems to have tried or succeeded before. Edit: ** More reading, only Folding@Home has a client for ChromeOS, but their's not a BOINC client. ChromeOS is described as a thin client, meaning much of the innards to do BOINC computing is probably absent. [Edit 1 times, last edit by SekeRob* at Jun 8, 2016 7:16:23 AM] |
