Significant performance decreasing

Since about 5 days, I observe a significant performance loss (>10%) on several hosts (mainly Linux-based).
At the same time, www.wcgsig.com does report a similar trend: from 390 Gflops to 355 Gflops.
I do not have any idea for this specific performance decreasing.
Do some other contributors make similar experience?
Yves

Re: Significant performance decreasing

GFlops is credit based and credit is, well .... known to go all over the place. That said, the PCZika chart, visit my sig link, does not indicate anything wild, but for that supply dip some days ago due work batching issues. Maybe your device had a bout of wingman that were claiming low and passing part of the bucket to you.

Re: Significant performance decreasing

Yes, I am seeing the same decrease in points. Until 8/13, my two Windows 7 machines running Zika almost exclusively were contributing 8200 points per day. Today (8/19), I am down to below 7600 and the trend line is still falling.

I have experienced a this in the past. It turns out there was a svchost process which was using the Windows update service which was eating about 50% of the processor time. It turns out there was a missing update which caused the update service to churn and get nowhere. I tried several things and eventually one of them fixed it, but I am unsure which item in myriad of Microsoft solutions was the magic one.

I had the Windows Update problem as well with Windows 7. My solution was to turn off any automatic checking for updates and reboot. Now Windows Update won't start unless it is started manually. Not a great solution as I can't update Windows.

I encourage anyone running Win 7 to take a look at Task Manager to make sure everything looks right. It will show up under a SVCHOST, as mentioned. To see this you will need a tool like procexp, but it is only for the curious. It can't be killed. All I am doing is not letting Windows Update start.

Re: Significant performance decreasing

Its well known that both Vista and Win 7 have this update problem and Microsoft do not seem to be interested in fixing it.

Feels to me that they are trying to force peeps to Win 10, otherwise they will have to put up with sluggish machines, which could also be insecure for long periods of time, while trying over and over to get the required updates.
Eventually the updates do arrive, but it can take days while hogging the CPU cycles.

Re: Significant performance decreasing

In my specific case, I operate only one Win7 host (automatic update "off").
The performance decreasing I observed concerns the 5 Linux hosts; both AMD as well as Intel based, whereas the i7 6700K performance decreased from 12'800 to 11'400 daily points. Likewise, a Phenom II x6 host decreased from 7'000 to 6'000 daily points.
In the meantime, OET1 seems to experience a similar performance decreasing as well.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Significant performance decreasing

Have seen a 24% decrease.
- 12 August: 53.4 points per hour (based on 57 Valids)
- 21 August: 40.5 points per hour (93 Valids)

EDIT: changed "Augustus" to "August" (since "augustus" is Dutch)

Re: Significant performance decreasing

Got a 15+ percent daily drop on 1 device, but that's purely W10 horrible efficiency, and that drop is, I'm pretty sure, from background processes that kick in after the screen goes into lock after 10 minutes idle... can observe this with BOINCTasks from remote frustrated

Re: Significant performance decreasing

I have noticed this variability over many different projects, particularly OET and Zika. My average points performance on all three of my computers seem to dip and rise in unison regardless of any external factors. At first I thought that this was a phenomenon of the number of WUs in PV Jail but that has been fairly constant recently. Another factor that may be significant is my ambient temperature which changes by + or - 15C across a period of a week or so. Also when WUs are taking more time, the number of hours held in PV Jail increases which could also explain the dips.
