Raspberry Pi 3

Hi all. I'm looking at making a bramble or cluster of Pi 3's. Can i run any of the WCG WUs on it? Im a noob at all this and just researching the potential of the system. Yes I know i could use a standard computer for more effective processing but Im curious about playing with the Pi 3. they seem adequate for the WUs. 1.2ghz quad. Any opinions? Would i use a linux system to run boinc? or raspberian? Any ideas on the productivity one raspberry? 4 cores 4 WU a day? ha I have no idea what to expect. Any info is great. Plus it would help my gridcoin production i imagine. Even in a small way.

Re: Raspberry Pi 3

You can, if you use Android OS on R.Pi3...& you'll get only OET & ZIKA on it!

Why?
Only ARM CPU project on WCG is Android based.

But yes, you're right...4cores = 4WUs = 4d per day! ;)

Re: Raspberry Pi 3

Do you think this is a good idea? make a cluster of them and let them go? i have nearly free electricity. Figure I could get a few of these and dip into more full time mining with them. maybe 6. that would be about 24 WU a day.

"why"
what do you mean?

Re: Raspberry Pi 3

Hi Hintsala,

I have tried the same, but default OS on raspberry won't run WCG tasks. I only have one that I bought to test out and I have set it to run Universe@home. I did not expect much, but even set at 70% (to not overheat) but it averages out 100k points a month (the tasks are long so about returns 4 tasks a day).

I wish WCG would in the future accept Raspberry. Even though not as powerful as a desktop/laptop they are cheap and you can easier get a couple crunching for you.

Re: Raspberry Pi 3

Hi,

is there any update for more projects supporting Raspberry Pi 3 (or arm devices in general)?

Hello,
World Community Grid does not officially support Raspberry Pi, mainly because it would not supply enough power to make it worth it. (Usage on other BOINC projects is less than 1% for Raspberry Pi.) Currently, we are only supporting ARM on Android.

There have been members who have been successful running World Community Grid with Raspberry Pi - please see this forum thread discussing it.

Thank you for your support,
ErikaT

Re: Raspberry Pi 3

Thank you - Currently I'm setting up an Cluster of several RPI 3 devices, which will note have that power regarding one single device, but if you combine them it could be worth.

Re: Raspberry Pi 3

Dear ErikaT,
based on the number of comments regarding Raspberry Pi (in particular since the release of RPi 3, one year ago), I would not consider the question being anecdotic. A real native support of RPi - based on Raspbian - would be more than welcome.
It is always difficult to identify and to quantify trends - especially in the IT world - however I tend to think that an accurate and efficient support of Raspberry PI 2 & 3 based on Raspbian would represent a non negligible contribution, and, from an energy and efficiency point of view, I would assume that it would be more efficient than the android based approach.
Cheers,
Yves
