I was wondering if there is some kind of app I could install in a few laptops that would automatically use their free space to store data from other laptops in the same local network (or over the Internet, for that matter) in such a redundant way that in case I lose all data from one of the laptops, I can recover it all from the data stored in all the others.
Something like RAID, but which works over a network rather than locally. Do you know of such a solution? Thank you for your time! |

You might want to look at the Western Digital My Cloud Personal Network Attached Storage. I just ordered the 4TB version from Amazon for 160 USD. CNet had a very positive review of it. The initial buyer reviews on Amazon were a bit negative, in contract to CNET, but those were from when the product was first released. Recent reviews are very positive. The latest versions have a second disk drive inside (RAID wannabe) but that seems for the intensely time sensitive, mission critical backup types or the flat out paranoid. The latest user reviews on Amazon agree with the CNet review. The drive attaches to your Ethernet switch and is supposed to be very quick and easy to install. I should have mine in a few days. I'll try to remember to update here with my experience.

@keithhenry Thank you for your input. I appreciate the time you took to explain your approach to the problem. What I had in mind was something that could be based only on the hardware I already have, but I'll keep that solution in mind.
@KLiK Thank you for your input. Unfortunately, Dropbox (at least the free subcription) is not an option for me because the amount of information to be kept arises to hundreds of GB. Thank you for your time! |
