Optimal settings for Android phone

Hi. Merry Christmas to all members on Wcg. Yesterday I installed Boinc on my Android octa core phone with MTK 6753 processor. I change settings to use all 8 cores, 100 % to use CPU, RAM, 100 %, max storage 100 % and I put 0 on pause protection to Boinc run always. I noticed that on this settings my phone is charging extremely slow, probably 10 % on few hours. Which settings do you recommend to put that my battery would charge relatively normal, CPU, RAM, max storage to use and how many cores to use? I forgot what are the default settings. Thank you very much, all the best!

Well, you can start crunching after battery is 80% full...that would give you most operability, while still donating some cycles!

Also, keep a close check on your temps...on some phones temp. is a signal for a stop of crunching! While on my HTC is not necessary, as it can do all 4 cores & not getting scorching heated! Soon it will be 24/7 device, as a new iOS came for a company phone (finally)! wink

Merry Christmas

Re: Optimal settings for Android phone

Thank you for your answer. I will put to run 4 cores with all to 100 % of CPU, RAM and max storage, is it ok? Should I change option for temperature and put higher or leave it at 40°?

Re: Optimal settings for Android phone

I would leave it at 40C or possibly even lower. Keep a close watch on your battery temps. If it feels too hot on the back, that will reduce battery life on your device. I have had two devices blow batteries up from running boinc 100% 24/7. One device was not cooled in any way, just sat on my nightstand. Another was directly cooled by a 120MM computer fan blowing plenty of air over it. Felt cool to the touch, but after several months of crunching, I noticed the battery was ballooning out just as the other phone had. Using only half your resources might be a better bet, especially if it is your daily use phone. It will put less strain on your battery, and you will still be contributing.

Yes, this is my daily phone. I will put to crunch 4 cores, should I leave 100 % oF CPU, RAM and max storage in options or to change all of this to 50% also?

I would leave 100% of CPU so that it completes work faster. You are typically better off reducing core count to relieve strain than reducing the CPU usage. Stopping and starting some work units have a negative affect. So, best to just let them go and run less of them at one time. You didn't say how much RAM or storage space the device you are using has. That is important when giving advice for a phone that is used as an actual phone daily.

I just replaced the battery on my Nexus 9 since it was ballooning out. It had been running BOINC 100% on its 2 cores for about 6 months minus trips to and from work. 4 core nexus 7 hasn't had issues and it sits on my nightstand. Guess it depends on the battery manufacture.

One was a Samsung S3, so the OEM battery had several years of "normal" service on it before becoming a cruncher. The other was a Motorola Droid Maxx with no easily removable battery. That one was tossed because I was afraid to try to open it up for fear of the battery. The S3 has a new battery now and BOINC is only running on 1 core. I purchased 3 of the refurb phones listed in the bang for the buck androids thread, and have them running 3 of 4 cores with a USB powered fan blowing air over them. So far, so good on those. I should just retrofit a minifridge to toss all my androids in, that way they will stay nice and cool cool

Re: Optimal settings for Android phone

Thank you all for answers. My phone is Doogee DG900, it have 2 GB of RAM, 8 octa cores on 1,7 GHz. Now I am running with 4 cores and CPU, RAM is on 100 %. I noticed that sometimes when some project is on 70 % or so it drops to 65 or less, why it is happening? That usually happens when I often use a phone when it is crunching and it is on charging.

Re: Optimal settings for Android phone

It may be suspending due to other processes using the CPU and then going back to its last checkpoint, or it could just be recalculating the estimated completion times and percentages.
