It seems as if the user activity / computer activity sensor is not working on Windows (10) installs. I thought this worked before with my previous install but now it doesn't. It's running all the time, and I have to manually suspend it, and it seems to even be restarting on it's own (possibly after some inactivity.)
I've tried a repair install, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I asked in a BOINC IRC room (is there one for WCG specifically?) and was told the Linux client of WCG was currently broken in relation to this feature, but from my experience, it seems it's Windows too. Does anybody have a recommended fix for this? I can't recommend WCG to other people if this aspect doesn't work, and as much as I like contributing to science this way, I don't like that it's running when I'm actively using the computer and it slows me down. Thanks. |

It worked and then YOU did something, and then WCG gets to earn a "I can't recommend WCG to other people if this aspect doesn't work". Usually reading the manual http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/User_Manual > http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/BOINC_Manager , which is rather short, resolves most common matters such as this client not pausing, because more often then not, the Activity menu setting has been changed [inadvertently of course], from Run based on preferences to Run Always.
BTW, If running Linux, strongly recommend to use the distro-ready version from the makers repository... Ubuntu Software catalog, Synaptic, Yum, whatever... the .sh packaging is sort of pre-Reagan era. I personally have no trouble to get my BOINC on Ubuntu to adhere, and pause for instance when the non-BOINC load is greater than 50%, but that's with the Run Based on Preferences setting selected ![]() |

Wow, dude... seriously? "It worked and then YOU did something, and then WCG gets to earn a "I can't recommend WCG to other people if this aspect doesn't work"." ?? I did something? Really? What exactly did I do but notice it no longer worked properly and then tried to fix it in the way provided by the install package, and when that didn't fix it, tried an uninstall and reinstall it to see if that fixed it, which it didn't.
I'm only mentioning that I can't currently recommend it to point out how important it is to get this fixed. I recommend people run WCG every chance I can get, however, I can't recommend it to folks who aren't as computer savvy if it's going to interfere with their work. BTW, you might want to take some time to read. I said this is with the Windows version. I only mentioned Linux because I asked in the room if anybody had a solution and I was told this was a current known problem with the Linux version, but nobody had a response about the windows version. |

Currently running seven linux systems with boinc - none has this problem. Laptop running Windows 8.1 and boinc 7.6.33 - 64-bit does not either. All will suspend boinc when cpu use for other than for boinc exceeds the threshold I have set. Running boinc does not slow down my applications or personal use.
----------------------------------------Another point regarding delete and re-install. Did you deliberately delete the configuration files after deleting boinc. If not, they would have stayed on your system and picked up again on the reinstall - thus achieving nothing. Many applications work like this - some ask whether the configuration files should also be deleted within the delete verbiage... Works this way so that during an upgrade to a newer version your settings and current WIP are not lost...

... but nobody had a response about the windows version. I have run 161 different windows device installations on WCG. None have had your problem. Boinc has never interfered with my work and always politely gets out of the way when it needs to.

I can only confirm within 10 years, I did not experience similar activity related problems on both environments: Windows (W2K, WXP Pro, WXP x64, W7 Pro), Linux (Ubuntu 10.04, 12.04, 14.04, LinuxMint 17.2, 17.3).
----------------------------------------As mentioned by SekeRob, I really suppose that your preference definition is not correct at some places. Do you use a Boinc Account Manager (BAM)? If yes, you should maybe check there your account definition. Cheers, Yves --- PS: By the way, if the activity feature would not run properly, millions of people would complain, since Boinc is used by many grid computing project. |
