World Community Grid Moves to IBM Cloud

Hello all,

We're happy to announce that World Community Grid is moving to IBM Cloud. Among other things, this move will allow us to identify, diagnose and address major technical issues more quickly.

The migration will begin on May 15 and should last approximately 48 hours, during which World Community Grid will be unavailable. This means that volunteers will not be able to access the website, fetch new research or return completed work during that time. Our systems will resume sending and receiving research tasks once the migration is complete.

Individuals or organizations who have restricted firewall rules may need to update those rules in order to continue contributing, by allowing connections to our new IP address (169.47.63.74).

Please use this thread to ask any questions about this migration. We appreciate you staying on topic.

Thank you for your support,
ErikaT

Re: World Community Grid Moves to IBM Cloud

Thanks for the heads up; I'll have to load up with a few days queue before then.

Re: World Community Grid Moves to IBM Cloud

Due to the requirement for uninterrupted network access for FAH2. What would be the recommendation for members running that project? Will WCG stop sending work a few days prior to the 15th or is the expectation that the members drain their queues prior to that date or maintain status quo and deal with the invalids at resume time?

Re: World Community Grid Moves to IBM Cloud

Very good point, maybe FAH2 is best suspended from new work distribution 96 hours prior and maybe all work that is expected to go overdue during the outage plus maybe 12+ hours after, resume, due client automatic back offs, could have the deadlines reset to +60bours after start of outage, so as not to get into an expiration race.

Of course this is kicking scenarios already taken into account with such long ahead planning.

Re: World Community Grid Moves to IBM Cloud

One of our first steps in our cut-over plan is to "Extend report deadline for all in progress results by 2 days".

This will address any issues with results that might become overdue while clients are unable to access the website.

Will sufficient WU will be sent to not overflow the available work?

Re: World Community Grid Moves to IBM Cloud

Thanks for the advance notice. I think I have enough queue space to keep me cranking away!
