As you can all see, I have gone ahead and posted the stats from the hiccup at WCG to the present. In the past, the admins were usually able to fix problems like this before the next EOD update ran. That meant you could get data that was correct and not skewed by the error. When you can't get to a problem for four days, that's not an option for folks like me. Almost 36 hours later, it's still not fixed and there's been no update. There's an outage planned tomorrow for the filesystem which may or may not be connected. I have absolutely no idea. Yes, you are right RT, it's about the crunching and the stats are for fun. However, as I get older, I find myself getting more and more concerned about the "state of things" given what we're seeing so far this century. If that isn't a sign I'm getting old, I don't know what is! Looks like it's my turn to be a source of amusement for the youngsters out there instead of the reverse when I was one of them.
----------------------------------------Despite some of the recent frustrations we've had lately since the cloud move, the truth is, we are still dealing with the same group of admins as before. When you look at their record, they do and have done an amazing job. We've seen the weekend, late night and overnight hours they've put in when things have gone awry. I am willing to bet it's not much better when things are going okay as they try to meet all the "challenges" and schedules that are "given" to them. Truth is, the same can be said for IBM's competitors like M$, Dell, Oracle, HP, etc. They're no different. I suspect the move to the cloud, at least as far as the timing/schedule, wasn't WCG's choosing. If you look back on past changes, they seem less sudden, more in/under control and better planned. I think they had to rely on other groups in IBM doing a lot more of the work this time around. There have been hiccups to some degree after changes in the past but this time around, they have been more severe and appear to have been caused by less complicated things like configuration settings. Things that all too easily get lost in "translation" when you're dealing with other groups with different priorities. The hiccup with the stats isn't what really concerned me (yea, I like to get the numbers out correctly and on time too). What concerns me is that the admins could go four days without being aware of the problem. How many times before the cloud move did it take them more than half a day to know about a problem AND fix it, at least with something as simple as the stats? What else could happen in the wee hours of a Saturday morning and go unnoticed for three or four days? This is not like them. The last time we heard from Kevin was during the last clustered filesystem meltdown a good month and a half ago. I recall a post he made about post-cloud monitoring. It wasn't an after the fact, looking back kind of post. Betcha he's been heads down, burning the candle at both ends trying to play catch up on that. We went a month without hearing from Keith until he announced the FAH2 asyncRE beta today. Hmm, wonder what he's been up to? These are the guys we normally hear from regularly. Jonathan has had to take a much more visible role in the meantime too. It's clear that the whole team really cares about what they do but WCG is part of a division IBM calls "Corporate Citizenship" - what IBM calls their "corporate social responsibility and philanthropy division". Not exactly what you would expect to be a major profit center. One things IBM has always been very good at has been cutting costs. They've had to. They've never had anything approaching consistency in terms of meeting revenue targets so, in a world where EPS rules, the only way to deliver on EPS when you can't meet your revenue targets is to cut costs. Yea, WCG is one of the things IBM can point to when it needs to talk about social responsibility but its real value to IBM is not that, it's as a showcase for their big customers. A chance to show off their latest technology and skills. In today's tech world, it's all about the cloud. With the way the WCG servers get hit, the load they have to carry and the amount of data they have to handle, that has to impress the bigwigs from current and prospective customers. When you're in a division that's a "loss leader" though, it's all about what you can do for the rest of the company and all while doing it for next to nothing at the same time (relatively speaking). WCG may have been wanting to move to the cloud but I really doubt that they had much of a voice if any in the schedule. The true importance of WCG is the research that is getting done and I can't help but wonder if the biggest threat to that is IBM. Yea, I'm an old fart who has been out of it long enough to be useless so it wouldn't surprise me to find out I'm all wet. Wouldn't be the first time and I doubt it would be the last. In a way, I hope I am all wet. I don't expect to ever know for sure. |
