Re: how to use Hardware Virtualisation

Hi QuantumEthos,

Quick question and forgive my ignorance. Would it be better to set up a virtual machine on a windows 10 and run a linux OS or to just run WCG on a windows 10 OS?

I have a laptop with 8 cores so I would assume one of them would need to be for the VM, and then the other cores would be used for an Ubuntu OS. In the end would you be getting more bang for your buck if you have a VM or just running on a windows OS?

Re: how to use Hardware Virtualisation

the virtualisation is because some projects have linux requirements for example the https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/forum_forum.php?id=3 project !

however the virtualisation of some work allows isolated work that otherwise would be unsafe to process.

other uses include running windows on mac fully and running linux inside windows or windows inside linux or running windows XP for some reason...

Re: how to use Hardware Virtualisation

Since Windows is usually poorly efficient in terms of memory management, WCG running on a Linux Guest (VM) on a Windows host would be probably more efficient than WCG natively running in the Windows machine. Some years ago, somebody reported here some figures about such a configuration.
Since I do operate only one Windows 7 x64 machine and the all other hosts are Linux-based I did not take the time for performing benchmarking on the only one Windows. I know, I should do it.
Even if virtualisation impacts performance a little bit (only few %), I am quiet sure that the Linux efficiency would pay comparing to Windows.
For cost-saving reasons, I use Virtualbox as hypervisor.
Cheers,
Yves
