Was I hacked?

Was I hacked?

I had boinc on three different tablets:

Last week the following started

The first one kept turning on the camera.

The second one kept turning on the voice recorder.

The third one kept turning on the speech to text app.

I had turned off all the apps except boinc...

Re: Was I hacked?

I suspect you were. BOINC does none of those things.
Cheers

Re: Was I hacked?

My little one downloaded something from the play store once and it popped ads all over the place, even when apps weren't even running. Couldn't even use the thing. I suspected the offending app, because it wouldn't even let me remove it. I used bitdefender (downloadable through play store) and it found that app to be the culprit. It elevated user rights, and removed the app.

In your case, it may be something different. BOINC wouldn't have done those things to your tablets, but something else may have. Download bitdefender or similar and scan the system. If you are running stock android, you could always do a factory reset, redownload boinc, and see what happens. If nothing works, a piece of electrical tape over the camera and mic ports may help.

At this point, I trust nothing to not be spying on me. They say even (smart) TVs can spy on people. I have not read any reports of androids starting camera and voice all of a sudden, but that doesn't mean it cant happen. My guess is a rogue app got illicit permissions and is phoning home with the data. OP doesn't mention what version of android, is it stock or custom rom, rooted, has it just received any updates to something, etc. OP says apps are turned off, but with so much bloatware on phones and tablets these days, its hard to actually disable all of it.

To say its android, is not productive to the OPs problem.

You have down-to-the-app control on which can access what resources, e.g. Camera has in Settings > Apps > Select Your App > Permissions: Camera, Location, Storage.

Also there's a way to find out which apps are set to have access to the camera: https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/8...sion-to-access-the-camera

Stackexchange is one of my top sites to search/query if I have an IT issue.

Edit: Got free Avast scanner and anti-theft on my tablet. This one is has taken it all and everything to include mic, yes, as are most pieces of security software... deep in. biggrin

I think that level of permissions appeared in android 6 or 7. If OP is running a version that has those permissions, that is definitely do-able. Prior to the specified permissions, I believe it was all or nothing type of install. It asked about permissions when you installed it, but you had to agree to whatever it wanted to access to, or no download.

Re: Was I hacked?

What can guess with usual sparse information in most all OPs. Started my tablet with 4, upgraded to 5, then upgraded to 6, and there is a 'hack' to upgrade to 7 and 8, but so far found no need for that.

Certainly recommend for those that use their droids to only crunch **, to disable auto-updating. Ensures nothing sneaks in through anything that was pre-installed by the OEM.

** Set mine to give notification of new app versions, but it wont go without me OKaying. Think that option has been there at least since 4.
