Have an old Motorola XT615

that runs android 2.3.7.
When I go to about phone and updates it says there's nothing to update so it's obviously not letting me upgrade to later android.

Can't run BOINC from google play because that requireds later android version.

I tried running NativeBOINC from google play and tried to use account with WCGrid with my username and password and i keep getting an invalid password error.

I have BOINC installed on windows and linux laptops and they're all running fine.

Can anyone help me to get my old crappy phone to work with BOINC or NativeBOINC too?

Re: Have an old Motorola XT615

Hello Tin Tran
This is your first post smile welcome to the Forums .

My old Sony Xperia used to run BOINC, but I had to use it entirely as a telephone for a period.
I experienced problems when I wanted to turn it into a crunching 'device' again.
I did not have those problems the first time around.

As is normal, one tends to forget the trouble once they are gone. So I'm not sure I remember correctly.

I could not access Google Play for download of BOINC. I think I had an old version. Somehow a newer version of Google Play installed itself, but it told me my android was too old, so BOINC could not be installed. Still, after some attempts I succeed in getting BOINC, and now this old cell phone crunches 24/7 again.

The android version is 4.1.1 and I have never been allowed to upgrade it.

My BOINC says it's from Space Sciences Laboratories UC. That's probably the server I got it from, so that would be without any significance, I think.

Sorry not to be able to explain better.
But now you know that somehow it's possible to download BOINC on an android 4.1.1 or newer.

Good luck, Tin Tran good luck
Where do you come from?
Viet Nam?

EDIT: Some typos

Re: Have an old Motorola XT615

yeah i was hoping maybe there's an older version of BOINC that works with adnroid 2.3.7 because on this youtube video i saw the guy was using it on an older version of android like 2.3 and it worked for him (the video is old).
I wished there was like an option on google play to download older versionj of the app

Re: Have an old Motorola XT615

You could sideload an older version from Berkeley or you could try installing nativeBOINC instead. I believe it still runs on those old versions of Android.

Re: Have an old Motorola XT615

i believe WCG needs android 4.1 or later. Best bet if you are set on running it is to root the device and install a custom rom. A quick google search of your model number plus "roms" shows an xda page with roms of android 4.2, so you could go that route.

Re: Have an old Motorola XT615

can you link me to detailed instructions... on how to load an older version of BOINC. NativeBOINC doesn't let me log in some bug i guess.
Or detailed instructions on how to root my the device and install custom rom as i have never done anything like that before so I need some hand holding :D

With nativeBOINC, make sure you are logging in using your user name and not your email address. I typically use an account manager to attach, so do not recall exactly.

Here is a thread on how to root the device, with the files needed https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964382
and here is one of several threads discussing roms for the xt615 on the same site https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943783
You can also look into cyanogenmod, those are very well known roms.
