World Community Grid running on a mainframe ?

Hi, I work at IBM and am looking at several Ideas I want to work on that use several things like Cognitive/Watson applications and/or running on a mainframe. One of my ideas is running the World Community Grid on a mainframe or using Watson. Has this been done/looked-at ?

Re: World Community Grid running on a mainframe ?

It has been done.

Thread
s390x architecture support
has a posting by
TUSEBC
"I have a z196 (along with the rest of the hardware I operate) purposed for show/demonstration. I've decided to start putting these CPUs to use.

I've successfully installed Debian on an LPAR with 16 CPU's allocated. I've installed the s390x boinc binaries, they function well, just waiting for work to be assigned.

So in the meantime I've installed KVM/QEMU on the mainframe and created some x86_64 guests, then installed the x86_64 boinc binaries within the guests. Obviously through the emulation layers performance isn't all that great as expected:

Debian s390x bogomips 14,367 per CPU
Debian x86_64 emulated using s390x hardware is only 8,190 per CPU

Since those really don't mean anything I ran a quick 1 thread sysbench:
s390x 2.64ms per-request
x86_64 emulation 52.86ms per-request

However, all of this is definitely interesting."

Re: World Community Grid running on a mainframe ?

Since you work at IBM, why not contact the WCG techs internally and discuss your desires with them directly...

Additionally, this should be in the chat or hardware forums not the beta test forum

** in regards to improving emulation efficiency on power cores:

Re: World Community Grid running on a mainframe ?

I will get back in a few days (through an email I received from WCG) to see what can be offered.

Re: World Community Grid running on a mainframe ?

I was able to get boinc docker running s390x. the docker container is ubuntu 18.0.4, but the docker build is s390x architecture. when I tried to add WCG, it said 390x architecture is not supported. Otherwise, everything else (except for maybe xorg x11 complaining /var/input/mice) everything else seemed to be running smoothly.

shame that IBM's own project won't support their own hardware.
