Hi,
I need some advice. I’ve bought two Xeon 2698V4 engineering sample chips and cannot get them to work with my supermicro X10-Dai motherboard in a dual CPU setup. I switch the computer on and don't even get to to the BIOS screen. BIOS is up to date and both chips work in a single CPU setup on the board. Checking with HWinfo, I have all the same steppings and QDFs etc, so they are identical in that respect. The motherboard works perfectly with dual 2680v3 chips. So I have trouble-shot as best as I can and I am at a loss as to how to get them to work. Any advice at all? Thanks! |

Hmmm..interesting.
May I ask about the power connectors on your power supply for the CPU’s? Are they 2 8 pin connectors or 2 4 pin connectors. Some high power CPU’s will only work with 2 8 pin connectors (8 pins for each CPU). The reason I ask is because some power supplies only have a 4 + 4 pin connector. The other thing I can recommend is to check RAM slots and make sure the correct slots are populated. But even with this issue the bios start screen should appear. If nothing else they are ES cpu’s not production, so who knows maybe they don’t have the hyper transport links to work together properly. Good luck my friend, let us know if you find out anything. |

On manual here: https://www.supermicro.com/support/resources/results.cfm
----------------------------------------On page 1-10, it's shown that CPUs don't share memory. So you need to install memory for CPU1 & CPU2 in order to work. Did you do that? Also, did you try to reset BIOS with new CPU config? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by KLiK at Jan 10, 2018 8:54:45 AM] |

Hey,
KLiK - Yeah! I have populated the memory slots properly and everything is running when I put my V3 chips in. I'm even typing on it now as we speak. I did a BIOS update to the latest one and got each V4 cpu working in single CPU config but not dual (which it is doing now with the V3 chips). So confusing. FlynRyan - Interesting indeed. This is my 4th dual cpu build and the other 3 worked fine out of the box. As for the CPU power draw, I am running an 8 pin natively and then 2x4 to populate the 2nd 8 pin slot. I don't think this is the issue as I already have another dual 2698 V4 ES cpu setup with the same power arrangement. This one being my 2nd dual 2698 V4 rig. So power draw should be exactly the same. Do you know how I check for this? Here is the HW info for the chips https://imgur.com/wTCblBu |

Power draw should not be the problem, as 2680 v3 is 120W, while 2698 v4 is 135W...the MBO can take it up to 160W per CPU.
----------------------------------------Only if you exchange the slots putting 8PIN in to where 2x4PINs go, instead of this setup. That might be an issue? Did you ask on Supermicro support? |

I can only make suggestions based on earlier cpu's but the first thing that was a red flag for me was when you said you updated bios
----------------------------------------Past experience was that only the bios released around the time of release or just before will run ES cpu's. Another thing to try to test this is run just one cpu in the cpu0 socket If good test the other. I have heard of issues trying to run cpu's of different origin (malay, costa rica etc) EDIT: re read the op sorry you are there before me so bios is good Just check where they were made ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by OldChap at Jan 10, 2018 8:15:53 PM] |

I don't believe the power supply itself is the issue, as long as there are 2 8-pin connectors (or 2 doubled 4 pin connectors) from the power supply to the motherboard to deliver the required current. In any case may I ask what power supply you are using for this board compared to the other 2p builds you have, are they all the same?
I don't do ES CPU's for this reason but I know sometimes you can get lucky and get a good performing chip for a cheap price. |

Hi Guys,
KLik - I haven't asked supermicro support yet. I may do that later on. Good suggestion though. I don't think it is the PSU at all. As the power draw is similar to the 2680 V3 chips and if the PSU wasn't good enought, surely it would fail under full load and not startup? QuantumEthos/FlynRyan - I am currently using a coolmaster 750W Gold PSU, so probably ok. Oldchap -Yeah, had to do a Bios update to enable the V4 chips. And yeah it works! How do you find out where they were made? All if can go by is what is printed on the chip. & maybe, just maybe, there's some special JUMPER to open (or close or switch), so you have to boot with that the 1st time. Had some similar problem on Intel MBO, until it booted & worked just fine! ;)
----------------------------------------But do ask Supermicro. They should know! |
