are computers alternatives to actual testing?

I was mainly thinking along the lines of things that are debated like stem cell reasearch, ect. And i was wondering if computer analysis is an alternative to acutal testing (i.e the testiing would begin AFTER the computer data was in.)

I admit i dont understand much about how this all works but it would seem to me that a spike on a hypothetical chart would be jsut as useful as testing around in a lab.

i would love to hear your input, thanks

Re: are computers alternatives to actual testing?

There is a Big Science program to create a Virtual Cell with more than a thousand scientists contributing research information to create the interacting systems of molecules. It is an interesting exercise for systems biologists. My opinion is that it serves to highlight the boundaries of our ignorance. We cannot wave our hands and say 'approximately' when trying to write a computer program.

So this is still beyond our current capabilities.

Just my opinion,

Actually, there has been some progress made about the Virtual Cell Simulation. Although, I am not sure how accurate its predictions are. It uses numerical methods to solve nonlinear PDEs that models the cell you are trying to simulate.

cool Re: are computers alternatives to actual testing?

one problem with modeling the cell ... i.e. the virtual
cell and the PDE approach, is that a very small number of
the parameters are known (rates of reactions and which
transcription factors regulate what, rmember there are many cells and 100k proteins/genes). So it is a bit to soon for this.
Many groups are aimed at measuring and learning these parameters,
as well as modeling lsubsets of the cell that we know enough about,
an effort largely known as systems-biology or functional genomics.
