Android on Raspberry Pi - MagPi #71

Even if I am definitively not a fan of Android on Raspberry Pi, you can take a look on the latest issue (#71, July 2018) of the MagPi Magazine , from page 16.
Cheers,
Yves
... still waiting for a WCG project support on Raspbian ...

Re: Android on Raspberry Pi - MagPi #71

Seems like a good alternative to ODroid that also runs Android. Trying to figure out the energy cost of Android devices (smartphone, ODroid, Rasp Pi) vs running an i5/i7 processor. I think i5 can run about 60W sustained... while it would take 10 old smartphones (4 core 1Ghz) to reach the same RAC (e.g. 1k).

Last I looked Quad core ARM devices would use around 3.5-4W. Adjustable based on if the screen was on or not. So, 10 of them would still be less than the i5 reference.

Re: Android on Raspberry Pi - MagPi #71

My Raspberry Pi 3 running WCG on Android at 100% uses 4.2W with another 1W used by a small fan.

I measured also that the 2 Odroid XU4 + network switch + 2 small fans use around 19W. However this measurement is not relevant as I already know that Odroids are running at a lower freq... I'm still waiting for bigger fans I've order on ebay...

Re: Android on Raspberry Pi - MagPi #71

My rule is that freq is driving the temps and power draw and RAC
So find your own optimal/desired freq (my case for phones temp<80 deg & no throttling = efficiency time > 95% & all cores active)

My 10 Amlogic 912 sticks were using 35W at about 1GHz @80deg if they were not throttled (during winter)

Re: Android on Raspberry Pi - MagPi #71

With 3 out of 4 ARM cores running BOINC on my Android phone (1.27 GHz) it's using about 2.6 watts. At that rate you'd need about 20 of these to match your 60 W estimation for an i5.

Re: Android on Raspberry Pi - MagPi #71

I am porting android os (2.3) on raspberry pi but I am getting some commands on the screen end by rainbow color screen . I changed the config text file in android os by hdmi (groups and modes) but still getting same . If you have any config text working with android os post here based on that I will change the modes and groups in hdmi.

If you are trying to get WCG to run on android 2.3, it won't. It needs 4.1 or newer.

Re: Android on Raspberry Pi - MagPi #71

Here's another link for Rasp Pi and Android. https://www.raspberrypi.org/magpi/android-raspberry-pi/

I bought an Asus Tinker Board. Quad core 1.8Ghz. Haven't looked at actual watt usage 100% on quad core, but it runs on a USB wall adapter 5V 2.4A .

Trying to get my Odroid XU4 up and running too.

With all the little accessories you need to get everything working, a low end prepaid Android phone ends up being a better value in terms of price. Not sure what the RAC to watts ratio is exactly.

I like the odroids better. Active cooling, and 8 cores. I have never done ratio comparisons on mine though. The throw away phones do well too though. I have some of each.
