Need a little help from an Android wizard

While I am by no means a newbie (I have been here over 10 years and have contributed well over 100 years) I'm not a techie either...

So my question is... Will a device like this work via WiFi without installing and activating a SIM card, or do I have to get another account with my cell carrier?

https://www.amazon.com/Android-Tablet-Unlocke...et%2Caps%2C189&sr=8-3

Thanks!

Do you know if the device has a connection to the Internet through WiFi now. Can you internet surf to say Google.com ?

If Ys then this will work
If No ... then then it will not.

I'm Actually considering purchasing it, so I can't answer that. But I'm leaning towards giving it a try...

Re: Need a little help from an Android wizard

It will work just fine over wifi. Being an octa core tablet though, the device may get hot and throttle itself with all cores crunching. You might have to find a happy medium between output and heat. Maybe start using it with 4 cores crunching, then gradually raise until you are happy. While you are not using the tablet, you could also put it on an active cooling area like an A/C vent or laptop cooler.

I've been using mobile phones blocked in the Sprint network without issues (via WiFi).

Like joneill003 said, it will get really hot.
I guesstimate that in 4-8 weeks the battery will bloat and it will start affecting the touchscreen responsiveness due to the internal battery pressure.

Re: Need a little help from an Android wizard

A lot depends on the quality of the tablet. I've been running 2 Huawei octa core tablets for around 10 months without any heat issues but cheaper generic Android devices may have issues. I have about 30 really cheap Vodafone 4 core Androids that have been running for over 3 years without any problems but the 2 Samsung and the single LG Android I have running needed replacement batteries after 2 years due to swelling. If and when you Setup Boinc on your Android then make sure the maximum battery temperature is set no higher than 40 degrees (C).

Re: Need a little help from an Android wizard

If you do limit them at 40degC, you will loose a lof of efficiency, unless you root them and run at min freq.
How do you manage to have them all 30 online without impacting the channel bandwidth?

Re: Need a little help from an Android wizard

I actually have over 60 androids of various vintages running! I'm currently not running them on WCG as Zika units take an age to run . I'm waiting for new units From Smash Childhood Cancer before I resume. I don't see any bandwidth fall off as the project I'm running right now has units that take around 18-24 hours to complete and I have a very good modem/router plus an excellent router which can handle between them 64 2.4ghz channels plus 96 5.0 ghz channels so plenty of room for expansion lol. I also have a high speed internet connection. As far as the temperatures go my Vodafone androids are set to 45 and these cheapo androids will not root (I've tried) others I've left at 40.
