Total Members statistic on Global Statistics page dropping?

I've noticed that for the last couple of days the Total Members stat on the Global Stats page has been dropping rather than inexorably rising as per usual. Wednesday it was 760,380, Thursday it was 760,308, and today it's 760,239. What's happening here?

Re: Total Members statistic on Global Statistics page dropping?

That is a bug that I'll have to fix.

Last year at this time we implemented our GDPR compliance changes. As part of that we also instituted a 3 year data retention policy (GDPR requires you to only hold onto data that you have a need for).

This means that if an account has no devices that have returned results in the past three years and the user has not logged in for over three years, then the account will have its data removed from the system.

In order to not surprise people, we started sending out a series of emails to accounts that are inactive every three months. For the first two years, the emails simply let them know that they have stopped contributing and encourage them to start contributing again. During the third year, the emails warn them that their data will be deleted if they don't either login or start returning results.

We waited 1 year before beginning to delete accounts because we wanted to make sure that any accounts that are deleted due to being inactive had the 3rd year emails sent warning the user that their inactive account will be deleted. Now that those emails have been sent, we have begun deleting inactive accounts starting on Wednesday of this week.

We are starting off slow with only 50 accounts per day since we want to make sure that there aren't any errors (for example like the one you found above). We preserve the fact that there was a user account and their total contribution in a way that is disconnected from any aspect of their identity. This is stored on a table that should be the basis for the "total user" count you describe above. However, the fact that the number is decreasing means that we are pulling that value from the count of users with results from the "USER" table (whose records are being deleted). We will make that modification and that will restore the count to where it was and prevent further drops. This will be released sometime next week so you will likely see further drops between now and the time we release it.

Thanks for bringing it up.

Re: Total Members statistic on Global Statistics page dropping?

Is it possible for us to still see the number of active accounts remaining somewhere, even though the "total accounts" statistic won't drop?
Three years seems like a pretty good timeframe to consider an account inactive, and it would be nice to know how many of those 760k members actually contribute to the grid (personally I know that one of the people I referred here made an account and never did return any results, for instance).
Something like "total accounts: 760k, active accounts 250k" would be really nice.
If this already exists and I'm just missing it, could someone give me a hand finding it?

Thanks!

https://boincstats.com/en/stats/15/project/detail

44.6K are 'active', 200K never joined the BOINC world after the old UD client was 'retired' may be some 13 years ago. 'Active' in the BOINC environment is someone who's returned a result in the past 30-60 days.

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking for!
The hosts category seems way off (by a factor of over 10), but I'm definitely more interested in users.
