Dedicated machine? Linux is free. Perhaps the privacy issues are not so important on a dedicated crunching machine. I don't know of any reliable performance comparison studies on non-Vina projects. Consider that there may be some bias on opinions regarding performance when there is not a reliable scientific method cited. Is linux supported on all projects currently and likely to be supported on all future projects? But, could always switch to Windows if a desirable project wasn't supported by linux.

There is a lot of very good information in this thread, thanks everyone for sharing. The numbers posted by @fuzzydice555 are especially interesting.
For a more general comparison (not WGC-specific) of Windows vs Linux, you may find this article interesting: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articl...-linux-creators&num=1 |

If your CPU is common enough, you may use the results of the WUProp project: https://wuprop.boinc-af.org/ Maybe consider contributing yourself.
----------------------------------------Linux seems to be best option for dedicated machines (although the concept is somewhat questionable, unless you are using electricity for heating). [Edit 2 times, last edit by Jan Vaclavik at Nov 11, 2019 7:58:09 AM] |

Well, Windows 10 1909 (a crappy monster breaking a lot although it was supposed to be a light update rather than an upgrade), has now the full Linux kernel included. Never heard if someone tried BOINC in WSL or whatever it's called.

Linux seems to be best option for dedicated machines (although the concept is somewhat questionable, unless you ar using electricity for heating). My hall and kitchen is unheated, the only option would be an electric space heater. So I opted for 3 dedicated BOINC/F@H rigs instead to keep it cozy in the winter ![]() I turn off all machines except a single 80W cruncher when the heat is not needed. During summer everything's off. You can minimize the enviromental impact of crunching, even though research is one of the things I think we should expend a lot of energy on. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by fuzzydice555 at Nov 10, 2019 10:02:27 PM] |

My hall and kitchen is unheated, the only option would be an electric space heater. Brings back memories, I used to do something similar back in the day - my place was connected to district heating, but it was shutting down about the time I got home from work. The only electric heater I had looked like serious fire hazard. So I opted for 3 dedicated BOINC/F@H rigs instead to keep it cozy in the winter ![]() I ended up with two computers running Boinc all evening and night in my bedroom. Not really sure how much heat it produced, but at least I felt like I was doing something. |

Linux is better because it uses significantly less overhead on modern versions compared to their windows counterparts. Plain and simple. Network is essentially OFF unless it's being used (from what I do), but beyond basic drivers support is abysmal. If you're running on a prebuilt machine that has Windows keep it. Otherwise Linux over an Ethernet connection is the way to go.

The situation regarding drivers and Linux did improve a lot during the last years.
----------------------------------------Last September, I succeeded to install Linux Mint on a fresh bought laptop within less than 1 hour and everything was OK, incl. WiFi, touchpad, sound volume and brightness control over the keyboard, etc. Frankly, 3 years ago, it was not as good. Cheers, Yves |
