I have just bought a W10 box with a Ryzen 7 3700X. I have TThrottle set at 60C and Winfo64 feeding in the temp to TThrottle . At idle the temp is about 45C but when I unleashed the 16 cores it quickly rose to 85 before I suspended work.
----------------------------------------I have two questions. Why didn't TThrottle cut in at 60C and why so hot. I have an older Ryzen 1700 sitting next to it which has been running full on 24/7 with the temp never reaching 60. I am taking it back to the computer shop to get it checked but the TThrottle inaction is my real worry as that is my insurance. Grateful for any advice. 3700x is a good processor, but probably will run a little bit hotter than the 1700x (assuming both have their respective stock coolers installed - I believe the 3700x stock cooler does not have the copper vapor chamber anymore, so it will be slightly less efficient in cooling than the 1700's stock cooler). But 60C is definitely hotter than it should be running at load...
----------------------------------------Unfortunately, there's not much to go off of in terms of information to diagnose the problem. Some points to consider in troubleshooting: -Was this pre-built, or did you buy the parts and assemble yourself? If it is a pre-built, check to make sure that you've removed all shipping material from the computer case. And then go through the other steps anyway. -is the fan curve in the BIOS messed up, or set for "silence" as opposed to "performance"? -is there anything in the case that blocks air flow thru the cpu and out of the case? -is the cpu fan plugged in all the way? -if the cpu cooler is an AIO water system, is the pump working? -are the case chassis fans working? -is the cpu cooler making good contact with the CPU? -is there anything wrong with the thermal paste (not enough coverage, etc)? -is the computer placed next to another significant heat source such that it doesn't suck in cool air, but warm air? -has the CPU been overclocked, or is it running at stock speeds? etc etc etc good luck FAHE! ![]() |

@DrMason Thanks for your response. The machine was built to my specs by my local computer shop. It is back there now on the testbench. The plan is to replace the thermal paste, then if no improvement, replace the stock cooler and if still no improvement, replace the cpu. At the moment my old 1700 runs rings around the 3700x so something is not right. The good news is the store owner/tech is going to join WCG now that I have explained what this machine is supposed to be doing.

The 3700x runs extremely hot on stock.
----------------------------------------Make sure you turn off PBO though, that adds extra heat while invalidating your warranty. I had a big tower cooler on it and it still overheated. My solution was: 1. Put on a bigger cooler: http://thermalright.com/product/aro-m14o/ 2. It was still very hot, so I set the CPU to fixed 3600 MHz in the BIOS. Anything over 3600MHz and the fans ramp up like crazy. For me this was a HUGE disappointment, as ryzen 3000 was supposed to be very efficient. I can run my 1700/2700 with just the stock cooler with minimal noise, but the 3700x is noisy even with a huge tower cooler. Tried undervolting with fixed 3600 MHz, setting a negative voltage offset.
----------------------------------------stock = 119 W power consumption at the wall -0.05V = 98 W power consumption -0.1V = 93 W power consumption Currently on -0.1V, it is prime95 stable, hopefully BOINC stable as well. Temperature is now 42C, needless to say the CPU cooler is whisper quiet now. Even with just a 0.05 undervolt the CPU is extremely efficient & cool. With windows 10 you can limit the speed right from windows.
Open the Advanced settings for Power Options in Windows 10. You'll need to look at these settings for each plan to maximize the impact. Look for Processor power management, then change the minimum processor state to: 70 percent for minimum and maximum processor state. Click “Apply” then “OK” to save the settings. (or whatever you want to set it to) |

I have seen this many times, and often BIOS Auto settings on motherboards are too aggressive (of course doing a re-paste and cooler re-mount just to validate numbers first is good).
----------------------------------------Also, get the excellent HWInfo64 software and start it with "only sensors" when prompted and you'll get a lot of good data. Also, get Ryzen Master from AMD website. It will show how far your temperatures are from max/throttle etc. Having a good Noctua cooler on a Ryzen 3600 CPU that I had access to a couple of days I could easily see a couple of things: 1. Having a good CPU cooler, the CPU will boost its cores to 4,2GHz max as long as your thermals are good enough. This means it will also increase voltage automatically (to maintain stability at those higher frequencies) and that means increased power draw, which results in increased heat dissipation. So, in my case, on 100% stability test load in AIDA64 software I got temps between 80-85 C. At first I thought that WOW, that's hot, but then I opened HWInfo64 and saw that the CPU was keeping (more or less all of the time) boost clock of 4200MHz on ALL cores (which explains the heat) and then I opened Ryzen Master and saw that the temps were 15 C away from throttling and therefore the CPU keeps the boost clocks at max. Basically, new CPUs work like GPUs have been doing for years: Boosting as high as possible while monitoring and aiming for a temperature max target. It will basically self-regulate. And the better cooling solution you have, the higher boost clocks you'll get. 2. Still, I thought, "okay so this is with "Auto" voltage settings etc in BIOS (only XMP enabled). Went to BIOS and chose "voltage offset mode" for Vcore and set an offset of -0.05V. Save and reboot. Now, the same stability test showed same boost clocks of 4200Mhz on all cores in the stability test and a temperature of 73-78 C. That's a massive improvement. Also, remember, fan speed was lower as well! Since fans were set to be temperature controlled by CPU temp and the CPU now generated less heat at full load so the fans could spin slower and still reach a lower temperature. Conclusion: 1. Make sure you have latest BIOS and Motherboards at Auto settings usually feed the chip with too high of a voltage. 2. CPUs will now boost to higher frequencies as long as temperature, current and power maximums are not hit. So, use a good cooler so that the CPU can boost higher. Also, having a temperature at 80-85C 24/7 is therefore not bad, but two second offset voltage adjustment in BIOS will lower those temps while allowing lower fan speeds. Make sure you do a benchmark before and after undervolting.

TThrottle uses a VERY OLD custom driver that, 95% of the time, breaks/never works on modern systems. The best way to cool would be to sacrifice clock speed in Advanced Power Settings
