Work Unit Nomenclature: How Many Areas and What Simulated Duration?

Let's take an example work unit:

ARP1_0008159_000

  • The first subsection "ARP1" designates the project, Africa Rainfall Project 1.
  • The second subsection "0008159" designates the local area/tract/grid square being simulated.
  • The third subsection "000" designates the generation with 000 indicating the simulated period of July 1-2, 2018.

2. I'm curious what the area numbers correspond with and how large each section is and if there is a method to the madness of labeling areas. I wonder if ArcGIS is being used to label individual sections. How many total areas are there?

3. The project introduction states the initial goal is to simulate one calendar year. So if 000 means July 1-2, 2018, then 181 is June 28-29, 2019, and 182 is June 30-July 1, 2019.

Would be grateful if Ms. Le Coz, Mr. Hagenaars, or Prof. van de Giesen could enlighten us! I know the project just launched, but very curious and excited.

Re: Work Unit Nomenclature: How Many Areas and What Simulated Duration?

Has anyone gotten any WUs in the 10,000 range yet? E.g. ARP1_0010xxx_000. The highest I've seen is ARP1_0009991_000.

Largest numbers I've had are 9853 (on 11/4) and 9836 (on 11/2).

Re: Work Unit Nomenclature: How Many Areas and What Simulated Duration?

The researchers have created the grid sections they are looking at and for ease on processing things on the grid, they have translated those grid squares to the easier to read numbers. What that actually stands for, I do not know where each one points to.

The 2nd set of numbers 000 are the generation, we are planning on going to 182 as that'll cover 365 days in the calculations.

Thanks,
