My days of improving rigs are really over. Thanks very much for the suggestion. I have a stock Dell. It is loud. So it goes!

why not leave hyperthreading turned on(using as much of the cpu cycles possible), and run with lower cpu-multiplier and vcore voltage. This will also reduce heat thus cpu fan noise, while also increasing some in efficiency.
----------------------------------------For example in windows go to advanced power options and turn the % of the maximum processor state lower and apply, until an acceptable noise. [Edit 2 times, last edit by peugeotforever at Feb 23, 2020 1:06:06 PM] |

Thanks for the comment. I had already reduced max cpu to 99% which seemed to help quite a bit in the noise front. I am running 12 jobs at 80% cpu with heat at between 59 and 63. That seems to be a good place. Since doing this ( a change from running 8 jobs) my daily points have actually gone down from around 65000 a day to 50000 a day. On the other hand, the pending validation is now 60 jobs... so time will tell if this is actually better or not. Thanks for the help. Mitch

1700x is an 8c16t cpu, when doing jobs like WCG, hyper-threading efficiency will not reach 100%. Considering the frequency reduction caused by the heat caused by hyperthreading, the end result may be consistent with the efficiency of turning off hyperthreading. You can try to manually control the voltage and frequency to achieve a balance point while turning on Hyper-Threading, or use a better heat sink.

Ps.Can you please tell me how to limit the number of tasks per project? MIP and MCM always appear in my task list.

find or create the file app_config.xml in
-windows: %programdata%\BOINC\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.orgsome folders may be hidden. edit the app_config.xml file, or create new file that will look like: <app_config> for download settings, go to https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do |

That suggested solution won't change the number of tasks in the task list, it will only restrict the number that can be run together at any one time. If you want to limit the amount of tasks sent, you need to edit the profile that the client runs under. At the bottom of the profile you can select how many will be sent to your machine.
