shock OPN Computation Error on old PC

The 1st OPN WU my old P4 received returned an error result . The 2nd is same, Computation Error, again. What's the problem? Not compatible w/ WinXP? The specs is: Pentium4/2.4G, RAM 2GB, HD 80GB, OS:WinXP Pro SP3, BOINC: 7.14.3

No problem running MCM, SCC, MIP, Milkyway@Home and Asteroids@Home though. The problem now is that if the PC could not run OPN, there would be no way to prevent OPN WU from being downloaded, because the PC is qualified for running OPN, which is an annoying process.

Re: OPN Computation Error on old PC

If you keep getting Computation Errors WCG will stop sending you WUs for that project after a while. You will only get the occasional intermittent WU after that.

Re: OPN Computation Error on old PC

I had the same problem with Windows XP and OPN, but decided to give up on Windows XP since I didn't want to run an obsolete OS anymore.

I was able to install Lubuntu 16.04.03 which still has 32bit CPU support and is a light version of Ubuntu.

Something to consider if you are technically inclined. I've converted one laptop and one desktop. And since I wasn't using them for anything else anyway, I wasn't too concerned if that didn't work. Plus I've used Ubuntu a fair bit so I had some experience in setting it up. Your mileage may vary.

I've been thinking of installing Linux (Ubuntu or whatever) on one of my old PCs. But the question is that is BOINC going to run a bit faster because you got a different OS (which translate into different kind of mind set in design and coding. I believe Windows is the worst no matter which version and which period.) or is it just the same because the CPU is the same? Or maybe I should just try install Android, another version of Linux.

Different operating systems and kernels can use the CPU differently or have different optimizations. There may also be different security mitigations for side-channel attacks.

Wow, that P3 and your P4s are ancient! That's dedication to keep them operational and pay the electricity for such low performance in 2020. I'd almost just recycle them. :P

Personal opinion: If they're dedicated crunchers, throw Linux on them and be done with it. Windows is such high maintenance and bloated.

Ok, I see, I'll try it on the P3 1st. Which version u recommend, Ubuntu? I once installed SUSE but gave up because I'm not a geek any more.

Re: OPN Computation Error on old PC

Ubuntu is far too heavy for that PC.

Try https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=277

Re: OPN Computation Error on old PC

Not only that but some of the latest kernels have dropped support for IDE and other very old hardware as the code wasn't being maintained anymore.
