angry BOINC Client Certificate Issues Again [temporarily fixed]

(Admin: I posted it here, because I thought I had technical problems with the site when attempting to post this, but I was able to get it to work. I can't move this to the correct forum.)

I thought this was fixed previously, but I've got finished tasks that won't upload, because it can't connect. Before I post the BOINC event log, I want to go over attempted solutions that didn't work in no particular order:

  • I uninstalled WCG and BOINC and reinstalled.
  • I updated to BOINC's latest release.
  • I disabled my firewall. I have ZoneAlarm, and it didn't make a difference. I even tried manually the firewall to allow the program accessed completely. No effect.
  • Windows Firewall said it had settings that weren't optimal, and this is what fixed the problem last time, but it looks like it was a temporary fix.
  • Added an exception to Windows Firewall to allow apps.
  • Unable to manually add apps to Windows Firewall, because I'm running ZoneAlarm.
  • Troubleshooter can't find a problem with the connection. I have certificate issues with JetBrains. It cannot connect to the net, either.
  • Tried manually disconnecting using shut down connected client. I had difficulties bringing it back up. I don't want to do anything that deletes the tasks already completed.
  • Unable to manually add another BOINC project.

8/12/2020 4:25:47 PM | | BOINC can't access Internet - check network connection or proxy configuration.

I don't know how to fix this, and I don't want to give up running WCG.

(Edit: On August 17, I solved the problem: It was a certificate from Digital Reflection Center that interferes with WCG. Until they can update the certificate, I can unplug the modem to run updates and then plug it back in when finished. I hope this will help others in the future if they come across this problem.)

Re: BOINC Client Certificate Issues Again

The certificate failing with both google and WCG implies issue such as firewall using it's own certificate from it to BOINC.
Firewalls do this so they can intercept and examine encrypted traffic.
Suggest check firewall settings.
If on a network with firewall appliances they may be doing this.

Paul.

Re: BOINC Client Certificate Issues Again

Thank you for the help; however, when I disable my firewall, I still get a certificate error. The firewall in the modem is set to low, which allows everything. I don't know which settings to review.

Re: BOINC Client Certificate Issues Again

What is your antivirus? Many of them, especially so called "security suites" have the possibility to scan SSL traffic, causing such type of errors.

angry Re: BOINC Client Certificate Issues Again

I use ZoneAlarm Extreme Security, which includes anti-ransomware, anti-malware, and a firewall.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's the firewall, because it doesn't work when I disable all firewalls, both ZoneAlarm and the firewall included with Windows 10. I tried running the one with Windows only, and it didn't work.

Re: BOINC Client Certificate Issues Again

I think there is an easy verification if your antivirus plays with certificates. Check properties of some well known web sites, like google or even WCG and see who issued their certificates. Normally for Google it should be Google Trust Services and for WCG DigiCert Inc. How it looks in your case?

Re: BOINC Client Certificate Issues Again

WCG: Digital Reflection CA
Google: GTS CA 101

I clicked on the lock icon in the browser for that information. I'm using version 84.0.522.59 of Edge with Chronium.

Re: BOINC Client Certificate Issues Again

Certificates are OK, so the root cause must be different. It looks more complicated than expected. I found this topic https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.p...p;sort_style=&start=0 where they mentioned that there are some expired certificates in ca-bundle.crt shipped with the version you use and this caused the same connection issues you face, but with other projects.
I would try to roll back to the last official,32-bit WCG version of BOINC, enable more detailed logging and see if BOINC uses now ca-bundle.crt from C:\Program Files (x86)\BOINC of size 228382 bytes and SHA-256 hash of A2E709FEF172710EF37D3CC5FB2C224D93D1666C6F7F66113B82F41E06751D57.
Do not install it as a service, just to be sure that you have the most standard setting possible.
That's the file which I have and do not have issues with uploading/downloading.
What could you do more: finish all your tasks and do project reset.

angry Re: BOINC Client Certificate Issues Again

Okay, I put WCG back, and I confirmed the ca-bundle.crt file at 228382 bytes with the hash mentioned. It's still not working. I uninstalled the BOINC program first, because the WCG install program froze. I kept the project files, but it still didn't connect. Finally, I did a project reset before being able to report completed data, and now, I lost the project files. I'm going to try to get them back through undelete, but I'm not counting on it. It didn't work.

I'm wondering if this problem goes to another area in Windows that deals with certificates, because I use JetBrains' IntelliJ, and I'm having the same problem when I try to update their software. It tells me that a certificate expired and that it can't connect to the Internet.

Oops: I dechecked the option to install it to run as a separate process. I hope that's what you meant by not running it as a service.

Re: BOINC Client Certificate Issues Again

Hi Katoda,
you wrote that the certificates are OK, although eagle_eyes mentioned: Digital Reflection CA for WCG.
I verified on my side and I can confirm that it should be DigiCert Inc. for WCG.
Are you really sure that the both CA are equivalent resp. acceptable for WCG?
Yves
