I had been looking into a Raspberry Pi just for fun... Rasbian/Ubuntu, obviously. But since the Pi can also run Windows 10, and Windows 10 on ARM can run certain x86 apps , would it be theoretically possible to run x86 Windows boinc work on an RPI?

I have done it, but it is extremely slow and I could only run one or 2 work units at a time. By slow I mean 5-10 minutes to boot to windows screen. Mouse moves lagged several seconds so it was hard to click on anything.
It would also crash after running a week or so and have to be restarted. This was on a 3B+ version. Version 4 may run a little better, especially with more memory, but you'll get a lot more work done just using Rasbian. |

CPU emulation for boinc does not work. Even if it does, the performance would be very (!) poor.

I had considered getting into a Pi 4 just for the experience. From what I realised, in another thread (below), the WUs processed does not seem like much so I ditched the idea. It did not seem worth the time and trouble. I have an old Lenovo T400 which does about what a Pi 4 does. It must be over 10 years old and worth 51 cents.

I had considered getting into a Pi 4 just for the experience. From what I realised, in another thread (below), the WUs processed does not seem like much so I ditched the idea. I would not buy a RPi4 just to run WCG on it, however if you already have one running and it's more idle then actually doing something, it's often quite simple to run BOINC on it. I have 3, one as domotica server (domoticz) and 2 as media player (libreelec), when they are idle, boinc is running. To have an idea, these are the results from the last 8 days on my domotica RPI4:

Sounds like a good idea ^

I tried tablets, phones, NUCs and thin clients, but not the Pi's.
The first four really aren't worth it unless you just happen to have one sitting around unused and gathering dust. The Pi didn't seem to me that it would be any better. You can get Quad core ( 8 threads ) Lenovo I5 and I7's as little as $130 to $150, strip out what you don't want and have a tank of a dedicated cruncher. |

Can try WSL to use Arm Linux BOINC in windows 10, so at least this can use the native CPU architecture. Search the internet: WSL Arm Windows 10.
I have no ARM devices with Windows 10 Arm operating system, so I am unsure about the speed or if BOINC WSL Arm or x86 on Windows Arm could work. |
