Hi:
I value the techincal knowledge base contained herein. i am looking for some advice about upgrading the above video card. I find that it is getting long in the tooth when it comes to GPU math calulations. The video card spends its days in an Alienware laptop that I purchased in 2013. Any sugestions as to a more up-to-date VC that I could upgrade to Gentlemen? Clive |

Are you sure that laptop is going to take a new card? If so, which ones are compatible?

In laptops, the graphics card isn't usually a card that you can take out and replace. It's usually a computer chip that's soldered (that is, attached permanently) onto the motherboard. There are some laptops that use desktop parts, and therefore could be replaced or upgraded, but they are usually very niche brands and very expensive products. I think Dell is part of the "solder to motherboard" group. I think for awhile Dell was trying to experiment with an upgrade-able system for its laptops, but the experiment didn't last that long. If you can provide the model of the alienware laptop, we could give a more specific answer.

Hi DrMason:
Thank you for your reply. I have an Alienware M17xR4 with an Intel 3740QM cpu with a base speed of 2.70GHZ. If the video card is soldered to the motherboard then it is what it is. Clive |

Read this for your options:
https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware-Gene...Gen-Graphics/td-p/5573165 but remember: if you update your video-card, the same cooling in the same laptop remains. So I seriously doubt if it'll run significantly faster, it'll heat up and then slow down, I think. Apart from the fact that getting the right card and mounting bracket 5 years after the question above may not be that simple. |

Thank you for your helpful reply Thunder7.
After carefull consideration, I think I will leave well alone. The mininual gains do not outweigh the potential pitfalls of trying to upgrade the GPU. As the old saying goes, "If ain't broke, don't fix it!" As I could see that the 660M video card was running at close to 100%, I thought I would swap it out and create more head room. Easier said than done! Again thanks for your help. Clive |
