Hi
Updated to Ubuntu 20.10 and Boinc will not work. I get a 'gui_rpc_auth.cfg exists but can't be read error'. My username is in the Boinc group, The file is in the Boinc group, And it contains a password I put in there. And I have rebooted the computer several times while doing this. Any ideas? |

Yes, they broke something over at BOINC... Forum thread here -
----------------------------------------https://boinc.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=14023 Cure? You can manually install a different version that should fix it or roll with 20.04 and avoid 20.10 entirely until the next LTS comes out. |

Good to know... and with the new version of Boinc gui_npc_auth.cf can no longer be empty. It's starting to look like Window 10 with their constant updates and adding of this and that feature and they are always changing something with my settings. PIA. Would be good if we could just do security updates but this is for another forum somewhere else.
----------------------------------------My cure: Not do anymore updates for a long while. It works so why fix it. They only do WCG WUs so what's the risk and no one else has access so why can't I have an empty gui_npc_auth.cf. Or turn off updates if I can find the setting. Hi there,
----------------------------------------I am using Ubutu 20.10 on one machine. I had the same error, but followed a workaround - I forgot where I found it.. Here it is... In /var/lib/boinc-client, there was a link to /etc/boinc-client/gui.prc_auth.config . ( a purge and reinstall of BOIC did not replace the file in /etc) I sudo-deleted the link and created my own file and chmod 666 for universal read-write; and put in a 32 character password. Rebooted and Ran BOINC without the error. Hope it works for you!! jay ![]() |
