Hi all,
----------------------------------------With the GPU beta tests starting I feel now is the time to get me a basic GPU. I currently don't have one and honestly I don't know a lot about them. My main criteria are low price and low power usage. I'm not looking for the newest most powerful beast, I just like to get a little piece of the GPU action here at WCG. I won't be using it for anything else. At first glance there seem to be 3 low price / low power options: GeForce GT710 (>40 eur, ~20 watts) GeForce GT730 (>60 eur, ~25 watts) GeForce GT1030 (>80 eur, ~30 watts) Comparing cards from different manufacturers I see differences in type of memory (DDR3 or GDDR5) and amount of memory (1GB or 2GB) and with fan or fan-less. I guess my questions are: For running GPU work units, does it matter what type and what amount of memory the card has or is this not an issue? Are there any other card specs to consider that I overlooked so far? Thanks! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by SNURK at Feb 19, 2021 10:44:37 AM] |

GDDR5 is faster than DDR3, so theoretically, I guess it would be better to get that instead of DDR3.
----------------------------------------I'm a newbie at this as well but I have an MSI RX 550 2 GB OC - According to the specs on Techpowerup, it appears to be better than the GT 1030 you listed: RX 550 : FP16 (half) performance 1,211 GFLOPS (1:1) FP32 (float) performance 1,211 GFLOPS FP64 (double) performance 75.71 GFLOPS (1:16) GT 1030 FP16 (half) performance 17.62 GFLOPS (1:64) FP32 (float) performance 1,127 GFLOPS FP64 (double) performance 35.23 GFLOPS (1:32) Of course, there's the CUDA vs OpenCL issue. It's possible the 1030 would run OPN faster with the CUDA app than the AMD would run OPN with the OpenCL app (of note, AMD cards can't run CUDA apps). But that's assuming a CUDA app launches (so far, this BETA is OpenCL only). AMD cards usually have an advantage with OpenCL over Nvidia. My RX 550 uses 30-35 watts with Folding@home, Einstein@home, etc. BOINC says: OpenCL: AMD/ATI GPU 0: Radeon RX550/550 Series (driver version 3188.4, device version OpenCL 2.0 AMD-APP (3188.4), 2048MB, 2048MB available, 1232 GFLOPS peak) I hope I helped anyway. AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 4C/8T 3.2 GHz - 85W AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W Intel Z3740 4C/4T 1.8 GHz - 6W [Edit 3 times, last edit by Falconet at Feb 19, 2021 11:27:39 AM] |

Of course, there's the CUDA vs OpenCL issue. What issue? Has anything been said about a CUDA app? |

Of course, there's the CUDA vs OpenCL issue. What issue? Has anything been said about a CUDA app? I added that I meant if there would ever be one. The AutoDock developers have a CUDA app, but I don't know if WCG will use it. I should have used a word other than "issue", I suppose. Snurk,
The minimum requirement for a GPU right now to run requires OpenCL 1.2 and greater. Note, this also runs on intel gpu as well if your device supports this already. You should be able to tell if your device has intel gpu by the initial startup for the client, however to get WCG work on it, you'll need to edit your device profile. We added a new section in there to allow members to choose which type of GPU they would like to allow to run. Also, I would imagine in the next few days/weeks we will have a good idea of some specs for the various cards and runtimes to provide to the members. Thanks, -Uplinger |

Not that I know anything about GPU processing but I read this article just now. Don't get the new Nvidia RTX 3060. The article is about cryptocurrency but I presume it applies to crunching also.

Comparing cards from different manufacturers I see differences in type of memory (DDR3 or GDDR5) and amount of memory (1GB or 2GB) and with fan or fan-less. For GPU computing, fan is better than fanless, DDR5 is better than DDR3, and 2 GB is better than 1 GB. If you are going to get one of the cards you listed, I would get the GT1030 with a fan. I bought two of these 1.5 months ago for 180 $US. Now the same cards are 160 $US a piece. Damn cryptomining. [Edit 1 times, last edit by geophi at Feb 20, 2021 1:27:20 AM] |
