servers for world gird?

So I really like server hardware and want to work with it but I need a use for it. I have looked at other boinc projects but this seems to be the best for what it needs and what the work is going to. I saw a thread on cores vs speed and it seems like cores wins out so would going with say an 8 or 10 core server cpu be a good idea and if so what speed should I look for. If not what would be a better cpu. I have around 750 to spend. This computer would be running 24/7. I am a noob when it comes to all of this so sorry if I am not asking the best questions. thank you for any help that you can give.

Re: servers for world gird?

Server hardware is often about maximum cpu power in as little space as possible.
This means a lot of generated heat in small cases - which have very loud fans to cool them.

I'm not sure what computers cost where you live, but I'd suggest looking at a workstation. Buy a used workstation with 2 low-cost V2 cpu's, then buy 2 xeon 2696 v2 cpu's and you have a 24 core/48 thread machine which I think should fit within your budget and isn't unacceptably loud.

Re: servers for world gird?

I understand that noise and heat will come with rack-mounted servers but it is still I route I feel I want to go down. would your plan work for a rack-mounted server using the same CPU. Second, are their benchmarks on how that CPU runs when it comes to gird. Third what motherboard would be best? The reason I want to do rack-mounted is that I like that they are not tall and with a rack, I would be able to add more and more if I need to and part of it is because I simply like the look of the rack-mounted servers. Is that partly a bad way to go about this as I know I should not buy on looks but I can not help but love the look and the power that comes along with them.

Re: servers for world gird?

I run several rack mount servers as well as some workstations. They are both prone to loud because the cpu's are always maxed out. I run them out in a shed, so I not worried about either the noise or the heat. As long as they have enough air flow, they seem to run just fine. The power comes from the cpu's you use and the form factor they are housed in.

Re: servers for world gird?

so other than the noise and heat how do your servers run gird and what are your specs. Second have you happened to work with the cpu mention above?

My servers run 24/7 basically without problems. Since I run them with a live version of Linux off a thumb drive, the only real problem I have had is the the thumb drives wearing out. Some of them have lasted several years, but even when they do die, it is really easy just configure another one and plug it in. I run with no hard drives to save electricity. I am running the Xeon 56xx series(socket 1366) with dual cpu's (24 threads per machine). I will upgrade when I find cheap servers which have newer and more efficient architectures. I pay no more than U.S $100 per machine. Over the years I have retired several machines as I have upgraded to better ones. The results are available here .

Re: servers for world gird?

so after looking at the numbers I should with the setup recommend above I would be running around 20k a day maybe a bit more due to high clock speeds. after looking at data for other people running this that seems like an amount a day but what do you think. Second without using hard drives how much power did you cut. Lastly, I have heard of GPU beta testing when it comes out if it not already out will it make it where CPU or no longer needed or there will be at a slower speed where it does not really make sense to run them. From my understanding of BOINC I would think there are different tasks for different parts but on a server hardware server, I was told to ask this.

Re: servers for world grid?

I gird myself on some days, and always when getting in a car.

I don't know. I just know a solid state device will use less power than a spinning hard drive.

What else do you want to do with it besides crunch? Xeons are work horse processors. I build a dual xeon workstation and crunched until the motherboard died. About 7 years solid crunching. Used it for video editing too. Plenty of used dual processor systems out there to buy fairly cheap. But if you know how to build a system, build it. Cheaper. Don't need the newest processors. Go back a few generations. If you don't build, have seen some Dell dual processor systems on ebay that fit your budget and could work.
