wcgrid_opng_aut using 100% of one CPU, making system unresponsive

Today I ran into an issue with this process running at 99% and making my system really slow to use. I had to kill the Bonic client in order to use the computer. A search on the net didn't find anything related to this issue. In order to use the computer, I had to stop the boinc client

Also, it was trying to use 46G of memory. I tried to kill the process and it just started again.

Re: wcgrid_opng_aut using 100% of one CPU, making system unresponsive

MeSat,

I have not seen this or had it reported in Beta. Do you know the type of graphics card your machine is running?

Also, if GPU is causing you an issue, please check out the custom device profiles on the website to see if you have use GPU while in use set to yes. We highly recommend this to be set to NO. If running the GPU application is not good for your machine, then please set all the GPU options to no.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Re: wcgrid_opng_aut using 100% of one CPU, making system unresponsive

This just started today. Worked well until now. Did upgrades this morning and it may be related to GPU. nVidia GPU.

I turned off the graphics in the settings page now to wait for things to update.

Re: wcgrid_opng_aut using 100% of one CPU, making system unresponsive

Okay, after some time, checking status to see if there was any change and I got these messages in the status. Do not know if it related.

Apr 06 15:01:16 XXXXX: 06-Apr-2021 15:01:16 [SETI@home] Sending scheduler request: To fetch work.

Apr 06 15:01:16 XXXXX 06-Apr-2021 15:01:16 [SETI@home] Requesting new tasks for NVIDIA GPU

Apr 06 15:01:18 XXXXX 06-Apr-2021 15:01:18 [SETI@home] Scheduler request failed: HTTP file not found

Finally got the BOINC Manager to log in with the correct key and notice that the World Community Grid processes shot up this morning so I think that the GPU is being used to the fullest extent.

Looking at the tasks, the Open Pandemics is running on the GPU and just loaded a new process.

Re: wcgrid_opng_aut using 100% of one CPU, making system unresponsive

After turning off the GPU in the settings, the system is working as expected.

I find that the process was using virtual memory when I don't have any configured on this machine as there is 32Gig. I am going to play with the settings and see if that changes. It seems that the BOINC software is not recognizing when the machine is in use.

Nvidia graphics were not updated today. Kernel was updated.

BOINC configuration has not been touched in months.

I have a Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 (460.67 driver)

What CPU and GPU you have?

As for freezing slow downs:
- If CPU is only 1 core 1 thread, get a better CPU with 2 or more threads.
- If GPU is old, low end, and/or slow, this will slow down graphics and desktop.

On Linux Top, 100% = 1 CPU thread used. 800% = 8 CPU threads used.
On Windows Task manager, they use 100% = all CPU threads used.
NVidia OpenCL use a lot of CPU usage compared to AMD GPU. High CPU usage probably from NVidia OpenCL CPU wasting spin wait.

As for RAM usage, the "VIRT" virtual memory is not an accurate measure of memory used. Can use "RES" resource memory for more accurate memory usage. My boincmgr on Linux Top shows VIRT:98.3 GiB, RES:108412 KiB, SHR:75135 KiB. I am sure boincmgr use 0.1 GiB of memory, not 98.3 GiB, on my 32 GiB RAM, AMD FX 4100 Linux computer.

I very much agree that this is an important setting and that it should almost always be set to NO.
The default setting at WCG for this is YES.
The default should be changed to NO or there may be many more unresponsive hosts running WCG GPU tasks.

Re: wcgrid_opng_aut using 100% of one CPU, making system unresponsive

I have an 8 core and had 3 processes running. Two were CPU cores which is correct from my settings and 1 was the GPU. Now, for the actual settings I had, I cannot remember at this time and will reset them now. I just needed to use the computer for other stuff. I notice that the BOINC manager has more settings and will try them.

One thing I noticed today that may have been related since this istarted today.

OpenPandemics GPU is LIVE!
GPU is not running now and I will play with the settings again.
