I am currently running WCG on 3 computers: MAC iMac with a Radeon Pro 580X, old MAC Mini with an intel HD 4000, and MacBook with the new M1.
----------------------------------------Questions: 1. Has anyone put together a listing of which GPU's are being used now by Open Pandemics? In the even log all three of my computers say they are requesting jobs for their particular GPU but only the iMac seems to be showing in uptick in processed work units so far. 2. In the task listing is there anyway to determine which work units are being assigned to the GPU? Thx... Jim

No, the internal graphics of the MacBook with the new M1 is not supported.

Hi,
----------------------------------------First of all, I don't think I understand quite well the second question. It's pretty clear to me that if you receive a task using GPU, it'll be showed as using "xxx CPU + 1 GPU" and the name of the work unit is not the same as CPU only (for this one it's OPNxxxx). First question : I haven't find a list but I think I might have an valid answered. Each brand of GPU as it's own architecture as each generation too. The Radeaon Pro architecture must be compatible (or at least support OpenCL needed or other things needed). As for Intel HD 4000, it's been a while since I've heard of those so, probably to old either to be supported or to have enough perf/work unit. Macbook M1 I'd say not compatible because of the architecture of the GPU core of the M1 chip. A lot of things, even for developpers, are not ready for the M1 chip (that's the reason I didn't buy one last month when I had a great opportunity). Maybe, I say mabye (fingers crossed) I'll have a brand new computer in the week to come. Point is, it'll have a nvidia RTX 3000 series and I'm not sure if it will be OK to crunch with it because it's base on the Ampere architecture. Some other BOINC project doesn't work well with the latest or older graphic chips because of the difference between the architecture. (I can at least name it two of them.) That's my opinion, you're free to take it into consideration or not :) I hope it will help you a bit and that I don't say idiotic things. Best regards, micropro ![]() |

Thank you for the reply, I am not at all surprised that the M1 is not supported at this time. I am hopeful the 580X and perhaps the HD4000 are supported but I have yet to see any notation of GPU task being worked. Perhaps I have just not looked at the right time, are there many GPU jobs being released at this time to your knowledge?

1. Have a look through your Results Status pages here on WCG. Filter on Project Name: OpenPandemics - COVID-19. GPU tasks have names that start with OPNG, while CPU tasks are OPN1
2. The HD4000 is the Intel iGPU in Ivy Bridge CPUs such as my i7-3770K's. The Windows driver that initially came with these initially had only OpenCL 1.1, and did not qualify for OPNG. However, the current latest Intel Windows driver supports OpenCL 1.2, and with that installed you may receive Intel OPNG tasks for your HD4000, at least on Windows. Apple may not have that driver available though. But don't bother with your HD4000. I got some beta tasks. According to the Error log files, they would start and run the initial CPU section, and then hang when the task was handed to the GPU. Just one beta completed its first joblet. I aborted all of the received GPU tasks as soon as the first one in each batch hung. Another member has reported his experience with the HD4600 iGPU(s) in his later Haswell CPUs, which would use the same "Series 4000" driver as the HD4000. His WUs did a bit better, often completing some but not all of the joblets in a WU before they too hung. Even if it ran OPNG, the HD4000 is a very slow GPU. The Passmark G3D Ranking shows it does 332 G3D Marks, down near the bottom feeders. The fastest Intel iGPU is the UHD 630, and it's at 1416 Marks. Compare these to a high-end desktop card like the Nvidia RTX 2080 at 18618. Don't bother with the HD4000. ----- @micropro: I have a brand new RTX 3060 (Ampere architecture), not commisioned yet. I am confident it will crunch OK. The Nvidia drivers for the 3060 card (only) block crunching for just one Etherium cryptocurrency mining algorithm, but no others. Gotta go install that 3060 ... thank you, I did confirm that the iMac is getting OPNG runs and getting valid results. I am hoping the number of available OPNG jobs increase as they appear to be few and far between right now.
----------------------------------------I suspected the HD4000 would be a dud due to its age. I keep that old MAC mini around just to process BOINC jobs so was hoping to squeeze a little more out of the little thing.

UPDATE: I finally got 13 OPNG tasks for the mini with the HD4000, it processed them fine. Not as fast as the iMac with 580x but still crunched through them.

Good for you, and for everyone I guess.
----------------------------------------I still wonder if the Ampere architecture of the last Nvidia RTX is supported. But I guess it will not be really important as these CG are not easy to find at a decent price. (Yes I'm tempted to order one of those.) ![]() |
