Hello everyone, Congrats to you, BRYN MAWR, that you could help in this way. I found out for my part how BOINC can be installed as a service here; https://boinc.mundayweb.com/wiki/index.php?ti...7_series%29_on_Windows%3F But what I do not know, is: What are the benefits, if BOINC is installed as a service? Will more CPU and/or GPU ressources be given / be available for the projects? Here https://www.overclock.net/forum/18056-boinc-g...windows-7-8-8-1-10-a.html it is said that "Use BOINC Screensaver – Checking this box will install the BOINC screensaver and configure Windows to use the BOINC Screensaver when the computer is idle; Service Install – Checking this box will install BOINC as a service. It is recommended to keep the box un-checked and not install BOINC as a service. I would appreciate it, if the advanteges and disatvanteges of installing BOINC as a service could be explained. Thank you. All the best MS I do not know why the Windows version recommends to keep it unchecked, I use Linux exclusively and all of my systems are installed as a service. To me the benefit is that Boinc is running whenever the system is turned on, whether or not there is a user logged in. As I go away quite often for long periods it is easier to just ask someone to power on or reboot if there is a problem rather than talk them through logging in and starting Boinc. |

Dear Bryn Mawr,
thank you very, very much for your answer. It explains, that, if BOINC is installed as a service, it is enough to start windows, to run BOINC. It is not necessary to log in. I cannot proof it, but I can suppose that BOINC gets more ressource of a machine, if it runs as a service without logging in to Windows, as , supposedly (!!) there are less Window processes running if your not loggid in. I regret a bit, that I am not able to measure exactly, whether this gain of power for BOINC is true in reality. We would need to have to machines technically 100% identical (CPU, motherboard, really everything. Then we would have to run BOINC as a service on the one machine, and not as a service with full windows running on the other. With this test environment, we could proof that BOINC does more Workunits in the same time when running as a service. I cannot do it, unfortunately. Thanks again Best MS |
