While we work hard at the transition, we would like to thank everyone that made it possible

That was a strange holiday message.
Other than a few large institutions, individual donors were thanked obliquely. Followed by multiple lines about account deletion for misconduct. There are donors, still active, who've been here since the beginning in 2004. And people like me who contribute a lot from a location where electricity is not cheap. PS. WVG birthday challenge Found a typo. |

That was a strange holiday message. Other than a few large institutions, individual donors were thanked obliquely. Unless I'm misunderstanding you, Dayle, do you mean 'all volunteers' by writing 'individual donors'? Aren't they clearly enough addressed then? ![]() Dear volunteers – thank you for continued support of the WCG and the current projects. Or maybe I just don't understand your use of 'obliquely' here, Dayle? |

Yes, there is a misuse of a word, which should be corrected.
----------------------------------------We just past 2,387,361 years of computation. It should be "passed". Cheers

The post could have used some proofreading, yes. I would agree that the last paragraph could have just said to keep in touch via social media and the forums. Maybe you could include an "as long as you comply with the Community Guidelines" in there. But having a portion about deletions and bans followed by "Happy Holidays" is an odd juxtaposition.

The post was quite strange as it referenced some unidentified "transition" and a mysterious "birthday challenge". I went back a few months in news posts and saw no mention of either. I assume the "transition" is to Krembil, and I found some obscure post in the forums about a 17th birthday challenge...
https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,43870_offset,0 As for "there are still tasks to be finished before the technical transition is completed", are these tasks for us (usual BOINC tasks) or tasks for them? |

"...Cancer Computer for donating the server...." I would think one would need more than one server to handle the WCG work. From a workload perspective and from a resiliency perspective. I'm not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling about this transition. Hopefully it was just a typo

Picky, picky.
Since we are talking about years. What is this based on. It's possible this has been explained somewhere on the forums but ..... I've only been here since 2020 and yet have racked up 44 years. I assume those 44 years are based on the sum of valid WUs returned and hours assigned to each. So when an ARP comes in and says 15 hours and I return it in 11, what is that hour of computing based on and who/what assigns it? I've seen data here where some return a WU quickly and others over the stated hours. My poor little i5-2520M would certainly be in that latter category. And as we are nit picking.. We also would like to thank Cancer Computer for donating the server and storage system for the WCG operation... In this case "server and storage" are used as a modifiers (adjective??) of the noun "system" (what kind of system). They are not used to define how many. |

In this case "server and storage" are used as a modifiers (adjective??) of the noun "system" (what kind of system). They are not used to define how many. What does that mean? Who sells a server and storage "system"? Server is a unit and storage system is another unit. So when an ARP comes in and says 15 hours and I return it in 11, what is that hour of computing based on and who/what assigns it? CPU time measure by the host and returned to the BOINC client. |

OK, so then my machine computes the hours and I guess it figures that out by using the benchmarks of the machine which downloaded the WU.
----------------------------------------I just did the maths by downloading my history. It does add up to 44 years. Kinda counter intuitive that in 2 years I put out 44 years. I had really never looked at it in that light that I could put out more than 24 hours in one day. Glad age does not work like that. Now back to the nit pick. <start of nit pick> ...and the 2 units together form the server and storage system From Webster: definition of system d: a group of devices or artificial objects or an organization forming a network especially for distributing something or serving a common purpose a telephone system a heating system a highway system a computer system If I donate 49 servers and umteen petabytes of disk storage then that is a server and storage system (singular system referring to the group of devices). We also would like to thank Cancer Computer for donating the server and storage system for the WCG operation, and for continued cycles supporting WCG . This implies there is more to the WCG operation than just a server and storage system and of course I presume there is.</end nit pick> [Edit 1 times, last edit by BobbyB at Dec 29, 2021 4:44:35 PM] |
