I got a new PC on black Friday. It is very speedy, but it overheats. I am using a temperature monitoring program to protect the PC. I am manually running 1 WU at a time (I suspend the rest until one finishes). And that 1 is only using one thread 66% of the time to keep the temp under 80 degrees C.
----------------------------------------Is there anyway to get BOINC to automatically run just 1 WU at a time, so I don't have to babysit it? [Edit 1 times, last edit by littlepeaks at Feb 2, 2022 5:42:08 AM] |

Yes.
----------------------------------------BOINC Manager, Options, Computing Prefs, Use no more than XX% CPUs. Set to whatever percentage is 1 thread of your CPU. AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

If it overheats that badly running one thread at 60% usage then take it back and get it repaired under the warranty, it’s not fit for purpose!

Yes take it back.
----------------------------------------I presume you bought it online. I would prepare a dossier on the PC. They may not just take your word. Task manager will show CPU usage. You can take a screen shot at times. Make sure the time is showing. If the temp monitoring program has a way to record in a log turn it on. If not then make sure it is seen on the desktop when you take a screen shot. The Boinc logs may be useful. I have one here doing 24 tasks @ 68 degrees C with its Tjmax being 95 C (whatever that means.) edit: I checked and it means the temp at which it will protect itself and slow down. (will not commit suicide) [Edit 2 times, last edit by BobbyB at Feb 2, 2022 4:32:33 PM] |

I think the problem is that it's an I7 chip with the stock fan that is mounted perpendicular to the heat sink and chip. Had similar problems with that, but not as bad. Finally the screws broke holding everything together. I had it repaired. They installed a redesigned cooler and it runs so much cooler now. That PC is now 11 years old and has been running WCG 24 hours a day. Anyway will give support a call to see what they say.

I presumed it was a new laptop PC since you mentioned Black Friday.
----------------------------------------So it's an I7 (tower/desktop) with a stock cooler. I have an i7-3770 8 core running @ 56 degrees C but it is using a Cooler Master Hyper 212. I also saw a heat problem. I'm a bit confused. Are we talking about 2 different PCs (the black friday one and the 11 year old on) or just the one. If it is a new machine then return it. If it is a newly reconditioned machine then still return it. It isn't fit for purpose.
If this is an old machine then the answer as to how to restrict it depends on what you want to restrict it to. To restrict it to running just 1 unit from any project then Falconet's answer is best. However, if you want to restrict it to just 1 project then go to Device Profiles and click on Custom Profile, then check only the 1 project that you want. Scroll down to Project Limits and set that project to a limit of 1. That would mean that you would not have a spare ready to go immediately you finish a unit. To avoid that, set the limit to 2 and either use Falconet's solution or set up app_config.xml to crunch only the 1 unit of that project. Mike |
