Comprehensive Issue List & Report Thread (Feb. 24, 2023)

Hi everyone, this thread aims to list all of the issues (past and present, resolved or not) that we have been made aware of and exist as the main thread to report new issues.

To keep the forums organized, please report any new issues here, instead of making a new thread. This will allow us to aggregate reports and see yours faster. The thread will be updated when new issues/fixes are found, so be sure to check back every once in a while. When it’s updated, we will change the name of the thread to include the latest date of editing.

Thank you!
- WCG Team

List of issues that have been solved:

  • Global Statistics page on WCG website does not track recent WU activity
Recent WU activity is now reflected in the global stats page under the community Menu of the website sidebar, and we will be able to retroactively add statistics pre-dating the official restart over time.
  • Project preferences are being ignored
We have fixed the issue where project preferences saved to a device profile or the default device profile on the website would not be reflected in BOINC manager. To ensure the changes are reflected users may have to restart the BOINC manager. There is still an issue saving preferences in BOINC manager and seeing those preferences reflected on the website. As described in the section below about cross project identifiers and new devices missing from the Devices and My Contribution sections of the website, we have identified the cause of all synchronization issues between the BOINC database and the website database and will be able to resolve them all in the near future.
  • No WUs are available to download/no WUs since [date]
We are currently in the testing phase of the restart, and we release only a limited amount of WUs to crunch for debugging, optimizing and stabilizing our hardware infrastructure ahead of a full restart.
If you have not received any WUs yet, it is not a problem on your end. To learn more about how the restart works, read this thread.
WUs are made available in larger batches, then scheduled for packaging and distribution to volunteers at a low rate. When we are able to increase the rate at which we are currently sending out workunits, we will notify volunteers immediately.
  • No WUs from project X are available
Only ARP, OPN1 and MCM1 have test WUs that have been sent out. We are currently working on sending out OPNG WUs.
  • Error message saying to “remove the project, then add http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/
Ignore this message, the original URL is correct. This should not prevent anyone from crunching properly.
  • Granted credit on returns results isn’t showing in history
This issue should be resolved as a side-effect of the ongoing synchronization of hosts between BOINC and the website database mentioned above.

The issues we are aware of but remain unresolved:

  • Devices missing from the Devices list in My Contributions (In progress)
By our estimate, devices should appear within your Devices page within a week. If this does not happen, feel free to send us a support email (support@worldcommunitygrid.org) with your device’s name & host ID so we can add it manually.
  • User progress as shown in the BOINC Manager is not reflected in your My Contribution page. (In progress)
There is an issue where the queue that connects the BOINC database to the website database to update user contributions omits credits from devices that are not yet listed in the website database. Regardless of whether you can see it in your Overview page or not, all of your contributions have been processed and sent to their respective projects. Once resolved, the indeterminate period a user must wait to see a new device listed in Devices or My Contribution on the website after it is successfully added to BOINC will no longer be required. We are also working to add any stats pre-dating the time at which your device was first visible in My Contribution.
  • BOINC Cross Project Identifier is not updated correctly on WCG.
We have confirmed that the root cause of this issue is linked to the issue where new devices added by users do not appear in a timely manner in the Devices list and My Contribution section of the website. We should be able to resolve this issue between our message passing software and website database shortly.
  • Missing pagination buttons on project statistics history
This issue will be resolved with the next content update (e.g. News) to the website.
  • HTTP errors causing download issues (In progress)
With multiple updates made by our cloud provider to the network node in the data centre, we have successfully mitigated the worst of this issue. However, during peak loads users may still be affected. The “Retry Now” button in the Transfers tab of the BOINC Manager is the workaround to stalled downloads.
  • Overabundance of workunits pending validation
This is an issue caused by other users who downloaded tasks not completing them by the deadline, stalling the pipeline for others to download their own WUs. We are monitoring situations like this and will begin sending our additional copies to speed up the process.

"Grayed out Remove button when attempting to remove project from BOINC".
Not a WCG issue. Not an issue at all.
If people use Account Managers, then they have to manage their projects at the said Account Manager.

Re: Comprehensive Issue List & Report Thread (Aug. 9, 2022)

When I get a bunch (24) new tasks at 12:30 UTC, I notice that many of the individual files to download "temporarily fail to download" and have to be retried after some period of time. Eventually they all download and the tasks run smoothly. This is different behaior than what I normally see. I don't know if this is on my end or on the sending end that is causing this. I have noticed this over the past week.

The problem is on WCG's end. There probably isn't enough bandwidth in Toronto for this project. biggrin

I have the same experience with task downloads that require retries but eventually download successfully and run without incident.

Toronto is a major film hub. There's plenty of bandwidth over there. It's just getting to it... ;)

The reporting person (don't know if there's more than one) replied they are not and have not been using an account manager. However, that's a conversation for that topic/thread to keep this thread uncluttered. ;)

Re: Comprehensive Issue List & Report Thread (Aug. 9, 2022)

Are project preferences being ignored?? I thought that issue had been fixed. Hard to say for sure since I'm not getting any WUs right now, but I do see in the log when my preferences are updated.

Re: Comprehensive Issue List & Report Thread (Aug. 9, 2022)

Regarding a couple of the "issues we are aware of but remain unresolved":

  • User progress as shown in the BOINC Manager is not reflected in your "My Contribution" page
  • Granted credit on returns results isn’t showing in history

[With apologies if the following is already known and considered...]

I believe both of these tie into the "statistics runs" that used to take place at WCG round midnight (and noon?) (UTC) -- the basic BOINC statistics stuff that feeds various Stats sites uses a part of standard BOINC, but that cannot/does not do anything more than that.

I see three possibilities, the last of which would probably show other symptoms (such as no data being visible at all) so is only mentioned "for completeness"...

  • Those statistics runs are not taking place, so no data!
  • The runs are taking place but the new data is not being accumulated where the APIs expect to find it.
  • Runs occur, data in right place, some sort of API data access error.
If the second one is the case, might that be related to efforts at streak conservation?

Just some thoughts...

Cheers - Al.

To make it clear, it's the stats of the results WITHIN WCG, not the aggregated stats for BOINC that is the issue here.

WUs are showing up on the "Results" page, as send, returned, being in PVe/PVa jail and validated (or not). But...
- the system never acknoledges that it has received any WUs (top of the "Overview" page, it still shows Feb.21st, the day the system was shut down
- none of the validated results are aggregated per WCP project, neither for count, runtime or WCG "points".

Yet, aggregated stats per XML file for BOINC are created just fine, and are being picked up by those external stats sites just fine.

As the validadet (or errornous) WUs disappear from the "Results" page after a certain time (as it always used to be), it is at this point totally unclear if any data in regards to those WUs is retained so that created for count, runtime and "points" per WCG project can be given, or if all that work (beside the possible scientific "value" of the returned WUs) is still being retained. There has not been a clear statement about this from Krembil's site so far (or it really drowned out in all the noise)...

Ralf
