Unlike normal Boinc projects WCG puts combines project prefs (such as which apps to run and how many to run) with compute prefs (hardware specific stuff such as how much memory, storage, or amount of CPU to use). The problem is that if I change any project specific stuff the compute prefs then also get propagated to all other projects not just WCG. This causes problems when the WCG compute prefs are wrong, cant be updated, and cause computers to crash. Creating local prefs helps but is not always the answer.
----------------------------------------Separating the two prefs allows me to change which app I want to use with out causing the errant WCG compute prefs to propagate throughout all my computers and projects. ![]() |

search for app_config.xml on forum and internet.
----------------------------------------it's a file to create in WCG project folder and settings inside are specifics to an application of the project. i'm using this file for OPNG settings.
My GPU compute WUs as fast as I'm crushing bubble wrap.

I use app_config for my projects, it does not solve the problem I am talking about.

@cyclops
I would also like to have this added ability to further refine what specific projects a particular computer will work on beyond what is currently available for options. Specifically, I need more than four options (default, home, work and school) to select because some of my systems will error out on a particular project and others will not. I realize that your major goal is to get the website to function properly. Please consider adding this request to your list. Thanks! Bruce |

It is possible to create custom profiles beyond the original four. I have one named Mac that I use for an old iMac that can still crunch. This is the method: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/printpost_post,233436 |

I looked at it briefly, as I am at work right now, but will print it out when I get home and see how to translate it to Windows 10 usage.
Thanks. |

Separating the two prefs allows me to change which app I want to use with out causing the errant WCG compute prefs to propagate throughout all my computers and projects. You can change the WGC apps without changing BOINC preferences if you use this site. But yes, I agree, project preferences should be separated from BOINC preferences like on every other project. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Link64 at Nov 3, 2022 7:27:51 PM] |

I looked at it briefly, as I am at work right now, but will print it out when I get home and see how to translate it to Windows 10 usage. There is nothing Windows version specific in those instructions, they even work on a Mac or on Linux.Thanks. "Device Manager" refers to the WCG devices and just replace where it says "IE8 and Firefox" with your favorite web browser, the instructions are from 2009 but seem to work still even after the web site re-do before the move to Krembil... Further problems...after making changes to the compute prefs at other projects the changes are not reflected in the WCG prefs page after project updates. The changes made through other projects appear to be ignored as WCG continues to send out the old prefs.
