Re: Hardware Recovery Update

"The main question #2 is: could donation help Krembil to provide a reliable support with sufficient performance for the future?"

Sir: Your points and questions are valid, tho if no workunits are available, no kW of electricity are being consumed, of course.

Ultimately, I believe that together, we can help Jurisica Labs / Krembil get to a point where they can sustain IT reliability equivalent to IBM's - all it takes is $5 or $10 per month from just 1,000 of the 25,000+ active crunchers ... more would be even better, of course. cool

Together, we can make a difference, and to that end, I ask: You seem to be a part of a sizeable team - can you please send out an email to all members, asking them to donate small amounts each month?

Thanks to everyone who can help, in any way they can.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Thank you - unfortunately - UHN Foundation does not generate US tax credits at this point. As strange as it is - PMH Foundation does - we continue to try to find a way how we could convince UHN F to implement such possibility.

thank you

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

thank you - that is the plan. at the moment - the update from UHN F is only quarterly. I asked them to at least make it weekly. They quote privacy issues to let us know about individual donations - but hopefully we will prevail to have at least number of donations and the total sum (on a weekly basis - we have it on quarterly).

thank you

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Anytime there's an achievement, we'll plaster UNH and Krembil names and glorify them all over the press releases, but need a little loving in return.)
Krembil's name is all over the place in regards to WCG for the last 18 months. But according to Dr.Jurisica, they don't do anything for WCG in return... sad

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Thank you Yavanius - we are doing all of those and more. we also approached large Foundations. One challenge is - getting support for a given project is more feasible but that would not fund the back end. We are not charging other scientists. Many / most Foundations and corporations are quite "focused" - only cancer - not TB, or only climate, not diseases, ... and as WCG - well, we try to support a relatively broad range of research. We try to open hundreds of doors - hopefully one of them will result in some longer term partnership.

thanks

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Thank you KerSamson - question #1 is tricky for me to answer - but as described, IBM never pledged to run the WCG forever.

Facing the challenge that WCG would not exist beyond 2021 - we were looking for various options to find the minimum setup we can dedicate to the backend, and if/how we could repurpose existing staff to learn and run WCG.

It is not always true that cost relates to quality - but even if you buy a new equipment, there is a big difference in price for 9-5 x 5 service vs 24/7. Unless we find a partner that would contribute some of this service, i doubt we will be able to afford it anytime soon. It is also true that IBM had relatively small full time staff - but they also "outsourced"
many parts (including Blue Cloud, helpdesk, etc) to other groups within the organization - and that also crossing multiple time zones - it was relatively easy to have 24.7 coverage. Academic labs do not run 24/7 (except in some special cases for some specific experiment - but not all the time).

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Thank you ThreadRipper - all good suggestions, and we will try to look into the financially favorable one. In terms of design - a few years back - when we were doing fundraising cycling rides (and had IBM-OCI team) - we had our own design jersey and shorts - call it crazy colors (like the Mapei team in 80s) - but - we were wearing cancer data. The color represented up and down regulated genes from our analysis (using Self Organizing Maps) - and we had a protein interaction network, protein crystal (time when we were running the HCC project), etc - it was fun when other riders were interested in it - and we spent long time discussing science, just because it looked very differnet.

Maybe as a first step we should run a poll what kind of products may be potentially of interest - and start with the more frequent requests. But maybe - one of the volunteers, ambassadors may be able to help us in this quest too ?

thank you

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Thank you Sgt.Joe - we indeed have a few champions who are helping us - and several have not only great experience from sales - but also good contacts. A few current leads are promising - but the more we try, and the more diversified it is, thanks to broad links through volunteers, the higher the chance we succeed. It may not be one "super" partner, maybe we will have a group of them - some contributing equipment, services, ...

thank you

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Msg to Dr J. Please see https://www.uhn.ca/corporate/AboutUHN/Purpose_Performance/UHN_Strategic_Plan.
It would seem that WCG would fit into a vision for a healthier world. (at relatively low cost to them). After all WCG has massive processing power which could be used for this purpose.
They wish to inspire, invent and deliver tomorrow's care. Wouldn't this help at relatively low cost?
They wish to unleash the power of innovation. Wouldn't this do it?
They wish to elevate Canada's role in discovery, Wouldn't' this help?
Perhaps we should remind them of their vision with our contributions.
Perhaps you should remind them that is why we contribute.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

I have been contributing to WCG since 2009. It's sad to see its current state. Even before the RAID bus failure it's doubtful that WCG even ran at 10% capacity of its pre-Krembil days under IBM.

With a farm of machines I was easily spending $5+ per day on electricity already at the peak. It's not a monetary issue from where I stand. But would I donate $5 to UNH/Krembil?

NO - because since UNH/Krembil took over WCG we seen over a year of poor track record and frankly incompetence at running WCG since day 1. It's time to call a spade a spade. Krembil logos ought to be scrubbed from the website. They want publicity and only the upside benefit of taking over WCG. However when things go wrong it turns out they don't provide support and hold no responsibility. Have you no shame?

I've tried to keep quiet or say only encouraging things in the past, but it seems taking such an attitude has only resulted in this sad state of affairs. Just my 2 pence as a very disappointed veteran member.
